Iraqis reported with chemical weapons, says US

Some Iraqi forces are reported to have chemical weapons near the town of Kut, about 170km southeast of Baghdad, according to a US briefing today.

US Lieutenant General John Abizaid has told a news briefing at Central Command headquarters in Qatar that US troops are taking the necessary precautions. It is not immediately clear where the reports of the chemical weapons are from.

Real-audio footage of Bush getting his hair fixed ..

The British Broadcasting Corporation has apologized to the White House for its broadcast Wednesday night of a live Oval Office feed showing President George W. Bush preparing for his speech announcing the start of the Iraqi war. Administration officials are apparently steamed because Bush was seen having his hair primped and readied by a female stylist armed with a comb and hairspray. Below you'll find a screen grab from the BBC feed as well as a 10-second snippet from the unauthorized TV transmission.

Ouch! Dye Pack Explodes In Robbery Suspect's Pants

A bank robbery suspect learned a painful lesson: Never shove stolen money containing an explosive dye pack down your pants.

Shortly after the National City Bank downtown was robbed Thursday, police spotted John Gladney, 40, about a block away, walking strangely, in obvious pain.

Zambia ex-foreign minister chops firewood to pass time in jail

Zambia's former foreign minister Katele Kalumba, in jail on corruption charges, has resorted to chopping firewood in prison to while away the time and stay fit, authorities said. Kalumba was arrested early this year after he had eluded the police for more than six months using, he said, "juju", or traditional magic.

The Sound of Things to Come

No one ever notices what's going on at a Radio Shack. Outside a lonely branch of the electronics store, on a government-issue San Diego day in a strip mall where no one is noticing much of anything, a bluff man with thinning, ginger hair and preternaturally white teeth is standing on the pavement, slowly waving a square metal plate toward people strolling in the distance. ''Watch that lady over there,'' he says, unable to conceal his boyish pride for the gadget in his giant hand. ''This is really cool.''

US TROOPS CAPTURE CHEMICAL PLANT

About 30 Iraqi troops, including a general, surrendered today to US forces of the 3rd Infantry Division as they overtook huge installation apparently used to produce chemical weapons in An Najaf, some 250 kilometers south of Baghdad.

One soldier was lightly wounded when a booby-trapped explosive went off as he was clearing the sheet metal-lined facility, which resembles the eery images of scientific facilities in World War II concentration camps.

The huge 100-acre complex, which is surrounded by a electrical fence, is perhaps the first illegal chemical plant to be uncovered by US troops in their current mission in Iraq. The surrounding barracks resemble an abandoned slum.

U.S. Protests Russian Arms Sales to Iraq

The United States said on Sunday it had protested to Moscow about reports that Russian firms have sold Iraq antitank missiles, night vision goggles and jamming gear.

A State Department spokeswoman said Moscow's response had not been satisfactory.

U.S. and British forces are fighting Iraq in an effort to topple Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and to find and destroy Iraq's suspected weapons of mass destruction. Iraq has denied it has such weapons.
