Penguins stop swimming in circles

The 52 penguins at the San Francisco Zoo have finally decided they have better things to do than hang around the pool all day, swimming in circles. Now, it's time to hang around the house.

They're burrowing in, getting ready to breed. And their mysterious mock migration is over, for the least mysterious of reasons.

"The urge to merge won out over everything," said penguin keeper Jane Tollini.

Wrong number leads to pot arrests

Police found more than 75 marijuana plants inside a house after a woman who lived there mistakenly called 911 instead of 411.

Police said the woman dialed 911 shortly after 11:20 a.m. Tuesday. When she hung up, a police dispatcher called the number right back, and someone hung up again, police Sgt. Dan Rose said.

Two officers went to the house and found 76 plants valued at $76,000 growing in a room with sophisticated lighting. Officers also found three handguns and other weapons inside the house.

Net speed record smashed

Scientists have set a new internet speed record by transferring 6.7 gigabytes of data across 10,978 kilometres (6,800 miles), from Sunnyvale in the US to Amsterdam in Holland, in less than one minute.

Using a quantity of data equivalent to two feature-length DVD-quality movies, the transfer was accomplished at an average speed of more than 923 megabits per second, or more than 3,500 times faster than a typical home broadband connection.

Federal agents called in to investigate stolen sandwich

Federal authorities in Des Moines, Iowa, were called to the city's airport after a peanut butter sandwich was reported stolen.

The Transportation Security Administration was called because only 16 federal security workers had access to the room from where the sandwich was taken.

Christine Woods reported her sandwich was taken from a break room which is controlled by punching a code into a keypad.

Police took a report, but suspended the investigation and turned it over to the TSA.

Google's Memory Upgrade
How Blogger could do more than improve Google's Web searches.

Why did Google buy Blogger? Ever since the news leaked a few weeks ago, the Web has been awash with speculation. So far, most theorizing has focused on the ways that Blogger could enhance Google's ability to search for Web pages. But the Blogger acquisition could open up an entirely new service for Google. Instead of just helping you find new things, Google could help you keep track of what you've already found. Right now Google is a kind of information detective, and a brilliant one at that. But it could be something more: an extension of your memory.

Britain's dirty secret

A chemical plant which the US says is a key component in Iraq's chemical warfare arsenal was secretly built by Britain in 1985 behind the backs of the Americans, the Guardian can disclose.

Documents show British ministers knew at the time that the £14m plant, called Falluja 2, was likely to be used for mustard and nerve gas production.

Air Guitar Collection a Total Lost in Garage Fire

Thirty-six year old Steven "Stoner" McGarry's worst fears were confirmed after an early-morning fire swept through the contents of his parents' garage, including his stockpile of over 60 air guitars. McGarry's one-room apartment over the garage, which he calls his "bachelor penthouse," received only minor smoke damage.

The fire and water damage on the ground floor left him grateful his own life was spared, but he acknowledged the loss of his priceless imaginary collection will be hard to get over.
