D.C. Council votes to eliminate jail time for marijuana possession
Possessing marijuana and smoking it in the privacy of one’s home would no longer be criminal offenses in the nation’s capital under a bill passed Tuesday by the D.C. Council, putting the District at the forefront of a simmering national debate over decriminalization.
Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) intends to sign the bill, which would partially decriminalize pot by imposing civil fines rather than jail time for most offenses. The District joins 17 states that have taken similar action but doesn’t go as far as Colorado or Washington state, where voters have legalized the sale and taxation of marijuana.

Jamaica will decriminalise possession of small amounts of marijuana this year
IT WOULD have seemed a lot more revolutionary just two years ago but for Jamaica, it is still a welcome whiff of sense. The island’s energy minister, Philip Paulwell, who also leads government business in parliament, has said he will find time this year to decriminalise possession of small amounts of marijuana. At a stroke, the move will cut the number of criminal offences by as many as a million a week. It will also make a Jamaican break somewhat less nervy for ganja-puffing tourists.

Lego builds yet another record profit to become world's top toymaker
It is a brand name familiar to children around the world, but a decade ago Lego was in crisis. Sales were collapsing at a rate of 26% a year, it lost 1.4bn Danish kroner (£150m) in 2003 and private equity firms were circling the 82-year-old family-owned Danish company.
Now, after a series of job cuts and the ending of the family's management of the company, the plastic brick business has rebuilt itself into the world's most profitable toy maker ahead of Barbie's Mattel.

Mike Parker ist gestorben. Er war als Chef der Mergenthaler Linotype Company Ende der Fünfziger für den Aufbau der Linotype Type Library verantwortlich, die im Laufe der Zeit zum Industriestandard für Schriftsatz wurde und bis heute die wahrscheinlich umfangreichste Sammlung hochwertiger Schriften ist.

Hundreds of New Exoplanets Validated by Kepler Telescope Team
A huge new haul of planets has joined the tally of alien worlds discovered by NASA's Kepler space telescope, scientists announced today. All of the new planets are members of multiplanet systems—stars with more than one orbiting satellite. Researchers used a new method for weeding out false signals from among the candidate planets found by Kepler, allowing them to add hundreds of "validated" planets to the count of Kepler's finds. "We studied just over 1,200 systems, and from there we were able to validate 719 planets," says Jason Rowe of NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., who led the research. "This is the biggest haul ever."

Fast wie eine Krönung wirkt dabei das, was der Guardian heute veröffentlicht hat: Mit dem Optic-Nerve-Programm hat GCHQ massenhaft Webcam-Bilder von Yahoo abgegriffen. Dabei wurden innerhalb von sechs Monaten 1,8 Millionen Benutzer Opfer der Spähattacke.

360 million recently compromised passwords for sale online
Underscoring the insecurity of many online dating, job, and e-mail services, security researchers said that they have tracked almost 360 million compromised login credentials for sale in underground crime forums over the past three weeks.
The haul, which included an additional 1.25 billion records containing only e-mail addresses, came from multiple breaches, according to a statement posted Tuesday by Hold Security. The biggest single list contained 105 million details, making it among the bigger online finds, the firm told Reuters. The cache included e-mail addresses that most likely served as user names and corresponding passwords. It remains unclear what service the account credentials unlock.

Forscher beweisen: Aspirin ist tausendmal tödlicher als Cannabis
Nachdem vor knapp zwei Wochen der Fall einer Engländerin Schlagzeilen machte, deren Tod zwei Ärzte fälschlicherweise auf das Rauchen eines Joints zurückgeführt hatten, hat Deutschland nun seine eigene Enthüllung: Gerichtsmediziner der Uniklinik Düsseldorf wollen die weltweit ersten Todesfälle nachgewiesen haben, die durch Cannabis-Konsum ausgelöst wurden.
Dr. Benno Hartung, einer der Autoren der Studie, erklärte im Interview mit der Bild („Totgekifft!”): „Wir haben seit 2001 Fälle gesammelt. Bei zwei Fällen konnten wir nun jede andere Todesursache komplett ausschließen. Die beiden Männer starben an Herzrhythmusstörungen, die durch den Cannabis-Wirkstoff THC ausgelöst wurden.“

Kiffen ist keine Todesursache
Tödliche Droge? Zwei Männer rauchten einen Joint. Kurz danach starben sie. Rechtsmediziner aus Düsseldorf vermuten einen Zusammenhang. Der lässt sich aber nicht beweisen.
40 Minuten haben sie versucht ihn wiederzubeleben, doch der 23-Jährige starb. Er war plötzlich zusammengebrochen, in Bus oder Bahn. Äußerlich wirkte er gesund, war athletisch gebaut. Ähnlich der 28-Jährige, den seine Freundin morgens tot in seiner Wohnung fand. Keine bekannten Erkrankungen, körperlich fit. Was hat die Männer getötet?
Das Einzige, was sie verbindet: Beide hatten gekifft, ehe ihre Herzen versagten. Der Erste trug etwas Marihuana bei sich, neben dem Zweiten fand die Polizei Aschenbecher, Zigarettenblättchen und eine Plastiktüte mit Grasresten. Totgekifft, schreibt nun Bild.de, weitere Medien berichten von den ersten Belegen, dass Cannabis töten kann. Sie irren.

A few weeks ago, Glenn Greenwald, while working with NBC News, revealed some details of a GCHQ presentation concerning how the surveillance organization had a "dirty tricks" group known as JTRIG -- the Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group. Now, over at The Intercept, he's revealed the entire presentation and highlighted more details about how JTRIG would seek to infiltrate different groups online and destroy people's reputations -- going way, way, way beyond just targeting terrorist groups and threats to national security.
