Uruguay marijuana decision 'breaks internationally endorsed treaty'
Uruguay's decision to legalise marijuana is in violation of an international convention on drug control, a Vienna-based body set up to monitor government compliance with such treaties has said.
Uruguay became the first country to legalise the growing, sale and smoking of marijuana on Tuesday, in a pioneering experiment that will be closely watched by other nations debating drug liberalisation.

Die Legalisierung des Anbaus und Verkaufs von Cannabis in Uruguay verstößt nach Ansicht zweier UN-Behörden gegen internationales Recht. Das am Dienstag vom Senat in Montevideo verabschiedete Gesetz breche gleich mehrere Abkommen zur Kontrolle des weltweiten Drogenhandels, kritisierte der für die Umsetzung derartiger Abkommen zuständige Internationale Suchtstoffkontrollrat (INCB) am Mittwoch.

Uruguay legalises production and sale of cannabis
The world's most far-reaching cannabis law has been passed by the Uruguayan parliament, opening the way for the state to regulate the production, distribution, sale and consumption of the planet's favourite illegal drug.
The law, effective from next year, will: allow registered users to buy up to 40g of marijuana a month from a chemist's; registered growers to keep up to six plants; and cannabis clubs to have up to 45 members and cultivate as many as 99 plants.

NSA uses Google cookies to pinpoint targets for hacking
The National Security Agency is secretly piggybacking on the tools that enable Internet advertisers to track consumers, using "cookies" and location data to pinpoint targets for government hacking and to bolster surveillance.
The agency's internal presentation slides, provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, show that when companies follow consumers on the Internet to better serve them advertising, the technique opens the door for similar tracking by the government. The slides also suggest that the agency is using these tracking techniques to help identify targets for offensive hacking operations.

Denver City Council passes pot rules that allow smoking on private property, even in public view
Denver's City Council voted Monday to allow residents to smoke marijuana in a front yard or on a balcony, even if they can be seen from the street or sidewalk.
Jeremy Meyer, City Hall reporter for our partners at The Denver Post, tweeted that the council voted 10-3 to approve the bill that allows "front-yard" smoking of marijuana.

Dabei ist schon die Runde der Initiatoren international besetzt, sagt die gebürtige Österreicherin, hier im Berliner Tagungszentrum der Bundespressekonferenz: Janne Teller lebt in Dänemark, Priya Basil in Großbritannien, Isabel Fargo in den USA, Josef Haslinger und Ilija Trojanow in Wien. Doch die in Berlin wohnende Menasse kann sich entspannen: Weltweit haben mittlerweile Zehntausende den Aufruf der sieben Schriftsteller unterzeichnet, mit dem die Gruppe um Juli Zeh – die lebt in Brandenburg – und Menasse gegen die Kommunikationsüberwachung protestiert.
