Protesters Throng Frozen Moscow in Anti-Putin March
Tens of thousands of antigovernment protesters marched on Saturday through this city, gripped by bitter Arctic cold, in a third major effort by Russians opposed to Vladimir V. Putin’s return to the presidency.
A series of similar actions in December shocked the Russian establishment with their size and giddy, infectious mood, as a famously passive part of the electorate coalesced into huge crowds that chanted “Putin, go away” and “We exist.” But the momentum seemed to dissipate in January, as opposition factions squabbled and Mr. Putin’s victory in the March 4 election began to appear imminent and certain.
Then, of course, there was the weather — at noon the sun was a remote white disk above the horizon, and the temperature was measured at 20 degrees below zero Celsius, or —4 Fahrenheit.

Anonymous Leaks Marine Corps Massacre Case
The bombs keep dropping from Anonymous—first local cops, then the FBI, and now the Marine Corps: sensitive documents from 2005's Haditha Killings trial. Anon doesn't think the Marine in charge should have gotten off so lightly. This is their payback.
Seven years ago, (then Sergeant) Frank Wuterich and several other marines he commanded killed 24 Iraqi citizens in Haditha, Iraq, in an apparent act of revenge for an unrelated IED strike. Despite admitting to the killings, Wuterich just last week officially got off with only a charge of "negligent dereliction of duty." No jail time, no serious conviction whatsoever.

German gov't endorses Chrome as most secure browser
Federal security agency touts sandbox, silent update as features that keep citizens safer online
Germany's cyber security agency today recommended that Windows 7 users run Google's Chrome browser, citing the application's sandbox and auto-update features.
In a security best practices guideline, Germany's Federal Office for Information Security, known by its German initials of BSI, said Chrome was the best browser.
"Your internet browser is the key component for the use of services on the Web and thus represents the main target for cyber-attacks," said BSI in its published advice. "By using Google Chrome in conjunction with the other measures outlined above, you can significantly reduce the risk of a successful IT attack."

Google won't delay new privacy policy despite EU concerns
Europe's data protection watchdog wants more time to investigte the Internet giant's policy change
Google does not plan to delay its new privacy policy despite calls from Europe's data protection watchdog.
The Article 29 Working Party (A29 WP), made up of the data regulators from all European Union member states as well as the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), sent a letter to Google saying that the Internet giant should "pause" before going ahead with the planned changes to its privacy policy. In January Google announced that it would "simplify" its privacy regulations as of March 1. This would create a single privacy policy for all its services including YouTube, Gmail and Google+.

NATO to Acquire First Fleet of Unarmed Drones
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization agreed Friday to acquire its first fleet of unarmed drones under a long-sought deal that defense officials said would help fill a gap in alliance surveillance capabilities exposed by last year's military campaign in Libya.
NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the agreement, reached at a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, calls for a group of 13 nations to acquire five Global Hawk reconnaissance drones, which are produced by Northrop Grumman.
The 13 countries participating in the project are Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the U.S.

Zinc Reduces the Detection of Cocaine, Methamphetamine, and THC by ELISA Urine Testing
Federal workplace drug testing was initiated during the late 1980s. Since then, numerous methods have been employed to subvert these drug tests, adulteration of urine samples being the most common. A wide variety of adulterants has been reported to date along with suitable methods of their detection. Recently, websites have claimed that zinc sulfate can be an effective adulterant to bypass drug testing. Herein, these claims are investigated using standard drug detection kits and urine samples adulterated with zinc. Drug-free urine samples were fortified with different amounts methamphetamines and benzoylecgonine, to which zinc sulfate was added to study its effect. Urine samples from acute marijuana smokers were also obtained in order to study the effects of zinc supplements on THC drug testing.

Satellite Phone Encryption Cracked
A team of German researchers appears to have cracked the GMR-1 and GMR-2 encryption algorithms used by many (though not all) satellite phones. Anyone fancy putting a cluster together for a listening party? 'Mr. Driessen told The Telegraph that the equipment and software needed to intercept and decrypt satellite phone calls from hundreds of thousands of users would cost as little as $2,000. His demonstration system takes up to half an hour to decipher a call, but a more powerful computer would allow eavesdropping in real time, he said.'

Anonymous Eavesdrops on FBI Anti-Anonymous Strategy Meeting
As FBI and Scotland Yard investigators recently plotted out a strategy for tracking suspects linked to Anonymous, little did they know that members of the group were eavesdropping on their conference call and recording their plans.
The online vigilante group has released a 17-minute clip of a Jan. 17 conference call between investigators discussing evidence gathered against members of the group as well as upcoming plans for arrests. The group also released an e-mail sent out by an FBI agent to law enforcement agents around the world with a phone number and password for accessing the conference call.
