Truffle gene identified

FRENCH scientists have identified the genetic code of the truffle, enabling anti-fraud investigators to distinguish between true examples of the prized fungus and an inferior Chinese variety flooding the market.

The breakthrough is a major advance in the campaign to protect Tuber Melanosporum - the classic black Perigord truffle beloved of gourmets round the world - from its physically almost indistinguishable rival Tuber Indicum, which has been imported to France from China in growing quantities since 1994.

Traffic Accident, Odor Leads To Drug Bust

A suspicious accident and a powerful odor coming from the car led to a major drug bust Thursday. It happened shortly after midnight on U.S. Highway 71 in Cass County after the driver of a green Ford fell asleep at the wheel and the car careened off the road. Deputies roused the sleeping driver, who they identified as Kermit Gibbs, 41, of Kentucky. Police said they found more than 100 pounds of pot stashed in his back hatch. The smell, they said, was overwhelming.

The marijuana was worth about $75,000.

Interview with Simpsons creator Matt Groening

Matt Groening’s success as a cartoonist/animator may be the best counter we have to the old P.T. Barnum adage that no one ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the public. From his early notoriety as the man behind the comic strip “Life in Hell” -- which he still produces weekly -- to his ongoing bastion of American satire “The Simpsons” and its skewed, sci-fi cousin “Futurama,” Groening has shown that the comedy of dysfunction and disrespect can pull in a wide, devoted audience. But much has changed technologically in the 20-plus years since “Life In Hell” made its first appearance in an alternative weekly -- even in the 13 years since “The Simpsons” first revitalized and revolutionized animated television. Here, Groening offers his views on Web cartooning, digital vs. hand-drawn animation, and how technology has changed the way we view comedy.

Can you name the largest corporation in the world?

This organization may not be the one that first comes to mind. Yet with annual revenues of nearly $2.2 trillion, it dwarfs corporate giants like Exxon-Mobil ($191 billion), General Motors ($177 billion), and IBM ($85 billion). Indeed it is larger than the world's 15 top-ranked companies put together.

If you haven't already guessed, the corporation I'm talking about is the United States government.

Hackers Invade Texas A&M Phone System

Hackers in Saudi Arabia infiltrated Texas A&M's phone system, using it as a conduit to make free collect calls, officials said.

Phone carriers alerted the school to the suspicious activity Thursday, said Walt Magnussen, A&M's associate director of telecommunications. The university sent an emergency e-mail to employees about the attack that urged them to change their mailbox passwords.

The fraud affected five voice mailboxes among the university's 25,000 phone lines. The number or cost of the unauthorized calls wasn't immediately known, The Eagle reported Friday.

Psychedelic sketches

This is a small selection of my psychedelic sketches and diary pages from the early seventies, done under the influence of lsd-25. They don't have any artistic value. But at that time of my spiritual development they had a very special meaning for me in clearing and freeing my mind, fighting through my various inner masks and barriers, and opening doors towards magical tantric dimensions of the higher self as best described in Tibetan Buddhism. In 1976 I slowly finished my empirical psychedelic research which started in 1963, and switched over to Tibetan meditation techniques.
