Afghan drug crops up despite curbs
Opium production in Afghanistan has risen twentyfold over the past two years to levels similar to peak production under the terrorist-tied Taliban regime, the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration said yesterday. DEA Administrator Asa Hutchinson said independent drug traffickers had re-established traditional trade routes in the war-torn country and there had been a significant increase in the number of acres planted with opium poppies, which are processed into heroin.

Luggage bomb hoax lands couple in jail
A Maine couple's attempt to make a political statement by rigging up a fake bomb in their checked luggage led to their arrest, officials said Thursday.
Paul Kenneth Donahue, 50, and Teresa Marie Wood, 46, had been scheduled to fly from San Jose, California, to Atlanta, Georgia, on Delta Flight 576 Tuesday. When their bags were put through a bomb detection machine, federal screeners found what turned out to be a snow boot with batteries, wires and an electrical power strip arranged in a suspicious way.

Neue Gema-Gebühren für DVD- und CD-Rohlinge
Hersteller von (wieder-)beschreibbaren DVDs sollen der Gema zufolge künftig wie bei VHS-Kassetten 0,087 Euro je Spielstunde eines 4,7-GByte-Mediums zahlen - also insgesamt 0,174 Euro pro Stück. Die Speicherkapazität von 4,7 GByte entspricht der Gema zufolge einer Video-Aufnahmekapazität von 120 Minuten.

Quebecer finds one kilogram package of cocaine in mailbox, feared anthrax
Emergency squads racing to a report of anthrax in a mailbox were surprised to find instead that it was a one kilogram package of cocaine delivered to the wrong place.
"It was placed in a postal multi-box, very precisely in the box of a particular person," said Quebec provincial police spokesman Daniel Lamirande on Thursday.

While it has been known for some time that the polar bear is in trouble, new research shows that Arctic ice - the polar bear's primary habitat - is melting much faster than scientists had believed, says U of A biologist Dr. Andrew Derocher.

Man stands out naked in Siberian winter for four hours
A Chinese man has broken his own record by standing naked in sub-zero Siberian winter conditions for four hours. Jin Songhao, a 48-year-old man from China's north-eastern Heilongjiang province, broke his record in the provincial capital of Harbin. The Xinhua news agency reported that he stood in a "scenic spot" and that the temperature dropped to -29C.
