Die Brühe ist kalt, äußerst salzig und liegt unter dickem Eis: Die Bedingungen im antarktischen Lake Vida könnten kaum extremer sein. Dennoch beherbergt der See, wie Forscher entdeckt haben, lebensfähige Kreaturen.

Ein neuer Server für den Ameisenhaufen
In letzter Zeit gab es bei der Weblog-Community Antville Probleme. Die Performance war manchmal arg bescheiden, das Anlegen neuer Weblogs wurde unterbunden, User und Sysadmins hatten sich mit einer Vielzahl von Updates und Unterbrechungen abzufinden. Der Grund dafür: "Adele", der Server, auf dem Antville beheimatet ist, war an seine leistungsmäßigen Grenzen geraten.

Warum ein Belgier acht Jahre lang um ein Sofa klagte
Wie ein geölter Blitz war Henri Vanderweerden im Oktober 1994 durch eine Brüsseler Filiale des Möbelhauses Ikea geflitzt. Schließlich sollte an diesem Tag der erste Kunde ein Sofa geschenkt bekommen. Doch statt des Möbels bekam der Mann die Antwort: Leider verloren, zu spät. Damit gab er sich aber nicht zufrieden.

Schon einmal musste das Pentagon ein geplantes Propagandabüro zur Medienmanipulation wieder beerdigen .

Das Aufkommen von virenverseuchten E-Mails verdoppelt sich beinahe jedes Jahr. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt das Sicherheitsunternehmen Message Labs in seinem Jahresrückblick für 2002. Nach Angaben des Unternehmens, das sich auf das Ausfiltern von Viren im Backbone-Bereich spezialisiert hat, wurde bereits in jeder 212. E-Mail ein Wurm gefunden.

Prague is the Tijuana of Europe
Prague, the baroque jewel in the crown of Europe, is coming under siege every weekend by hordes of drunken British men on cheap "sex and beer" jaunts.
A Czech police official said yesterday that about a quarter of the fights in the city centre at weekends involved British men. "We're seeing increasing numbers of them. They fight amongst themselves or with locals," the official said.

One Dead, 9 Hurt in Blast from Banana Gas
- A man was killed and nine people were injured on Saturday when gas used to artificially ripen fruit exploded in a Turkish market, police said. Erbil Esmer, 36, was killed while shopping for bananas at a fruit wholesaler in the northwestern city of Balikesir, a policewoman said.
"A spark caused the gas used to (ripen) bananas ... to explode," she said.

The web bites back
Protesters are turning the tables on government officials and businessmen who they say are making the web less pleasant to use. The web activists have found the personal details of the man behind a federal surveillance system and an e-mail spammer and are giving them a dose of their own medicine. The home address and phone numbers of the two men being widely circulated and posted on more than 100 websites.

Eminem's former home did not sell at auction on eBay, despite reports that the owners had received bids as high as $12 million. When the house's owners hired a company to weed out phony bids, sales prospects dimmed quickly. None of the offers met the minimum bid of $120,000, and the online auction has now expired.
