'Bin Laden' hails recent attacks

An Arabic news channel has broadcast what it says is an audio recording of Osama Bin Laden praising anti-Western attacks committed as recently as last month. A voice, purported to be that of the al-Qaeda leader, was heard commending recent attacks in Bali, Kuwait, Yemen and the takeover of a Moscow theatre by Chechen rebels.

Hollywood Studios Unveil Web Movie Site

Five top Hollywood studios opened online box office Movielink on Monday in their first, tentative step to sell blockbuster films like "Ocean's Eleven" on the Web after years of fretting over the copyright piracy now threatening the music business. The movies are downloaded onto a computer hard drive, where they reside for 30 days, without being played, before being deleted. Movielink users must have high-speed Web connections, otherwise the time to download is prohibitive, Ramo said.

At $35,000, Big Truffle Is Nothing to Trifle With

L.A. restaurateur pays a record price for one very large specimen of the exotic white fungus. Joe Pytka, a 64-year-old director of television commercials, paid $35,000 Sunday for a mushroom.

Well, OK, it wasn't the kind of mushroom you'd buy in your local supermarket. It was an enormous, 2.2-pound white truffle, the rare and exotically perfumed tuber magnatum Pico hunted by specially trained dogs in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy and prized by gourmets throughout the world.

Butlers open up over Burrell's revelations

An butler is meant to be the soul of discretion, so the revelations of Paul Burrell, former butler to Princess Diana, have shocked other members of this tight-lipped profession.

"We are all of the opinion that what Burrell is doing is terribly wrong. It is sowing the seeds of doubt in people's minds all over the world about what the butler will do," butler trainer Robert Watson told Reuters.

HOWTO Encourage Women in Linux

This article explains some of the difficulties and biases women face in the Linux community and examines various strategies for addressing those difficulties in order to encourage more participation by women. At the 2002 Ottawa Linux Symposium, I hosted a LinuxChix Birds Of a Feather session. During the BOF and throughout the conference, I heard the same set of questions: "My girlfriend hates Windows, how can I encourage her to use Linux?" "Almost no women attend my local LUG. How can I fix this?" "Why aren't there more women in open source?"
