Trotz akuter Hungerkrise hat Sambia eine Lebensmittelhilfe der USA mit genmanipuliertem Mais abgelehnt. Landwirtschaftsminister Mundia Sikatana folgte damit am Dienstag einer Empfehlung sambischer Wissenschafter. Die gesundheitliche Unbedenklichkeit von Gen-Mais könne zurzeit niemand garantieren, sagte Sikatana. Präsident Levy Mwanawasa hat den Gen-Mais aus den USA sogar als Gift bezeichnet.

Der Sternschnuppenschauer der Leoniden könnte heuer ein letztes Mal ein sehenswertes Himmelsspektakel verursachen und dann für Jahrzehnte verschwinden. Der Komet Tempel-Tuttle, dessen "Dreckspur" den alljährlichen Leoniden-Sturm verursacht, ist nach seiner Sonnenannäherung 1998 nun wieder auf dem Weg in die unendlichen Weiten des Weltalls.

Bomben und Explosionen sind medienästhetisch kaum zu überbieten
Warum haben Terroristen bislang kaum biologische, chemische oder radioaktive Massenvernichtungswaffen eingesetzt?
Wenn die Gefahr so bedeutsam sein soll, dass Terroristen Anschläge mit Massenvernichtungswaffen ausführen, dann wäre es in der Tat recht interessant zu eruieren, warum dies nicht schon öfter geschehen ist oder warum Terroristen normalerweise doch auf Sprengstoffe - und sei es in Raketen verwandelte Passagierflugzeuge - oder auf immer spektakulärere Geiselnahmen wie eben in Moskau zurückgreifen.
