Italy Volcano Erupts, Blackens Sky

Mount Etna spewed columns of ash that blackened skies as far away as Africa, and rivers of steaming lava streamed down its slopes, setting a pine forest on fire and leading officials to close schools and an airport near the volcano.

The Stupid Crook Book

It’s a good thing that crime doesn’t pay — otherwise some of the world’s dumbest criminals would be asking for a refund. In his new book, “The Stupid Crook Book,” Leland Gregory shares his collection of stories — some of them laugh-out-loud funny — about the criminally inane. Read an excerpt from his book.

'And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.' In the best tradition of Man's glowing relationship with Divinity, the appearance of a mysterious beam of light in a Jerusalem church is defying explanation.

Turn to Pravda for the real news

A quick glance at the headlines on Online Pravda (english.pravda.ru) suggests that the new Russia is every bit as paranoid as the old Soviet Union. One headline reads "What if the USA Bombs Russia?" (The Russians apparently don't realize that we have to bomb Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea, Indonesia and possibly suburban Washington, D.C., before we can turn our attentions to them.) Another attempts to answer the question that I didn't realize anyone had asked: "How to Protect Russia From Western Capital?"

Giant Pig Attacks Alaska

Well, no one has actually called it a flying pig as of yet, but it might as well be. Just like the poor Connecticut residents whose story I brought to light when their neighborhoods were viciously bombarded by the cacophony of Mister Softee ice cream trucks, the people of Alaska are in trouble.

Russian gas may be secret crowd-control weapon

Weapons experts have suggested a 1950s chemical weapon called 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate, or BZ, may have been used. This causes disorientation and hallucinations and was tested by the US on servicemen in the 1960s.

But according to Christopher Holstege of the University of Virginia, BZ takes an hour to start working and its effects peak at eight hours - whereas the Russian gas worked in seconds. Moreover, a hallucinogen seems a risky choice for terrorists strapped to bombs.

Military Toxicologists Guilty of Death Toll

The Western media pointed out the unwillingness of the Russian government to release the name of the gas. The Daily Telegraph of Great Britain wrote with reference to a London military expert that it was probably BZ gas. This gas was first used by the American military in Vietnam.

Russian experts also believe that it was BZ gas. Doctor of Chemical Science Lev Fyodorov, said: “There can be no other variant. Our special forces have only this kind of gas. Theoretically, it is not a lethal gas if it affects healthy people. However, there were elderly people, children with weak organisms, and asthma-sick individuals among the hostages. This gas was lethal for them.”
