US BACKDOORED our satellites, claim UAE
A French contract to supply intelligence satellites to the United Arab Emirates could be cancelled, with the UAE claiming it's discovered backdoors in US-supplied components of the birds.
Defence News, which broke the story, claims that the $US930 million contract could be scrapped, according to high-level UAE sources, if the issue can't be resolved. That would be a blow for prime contractor Airbus Defence and Space, and payload maker Thales Alenia Space.

Die Rede des NSA-Aufdeckers Glenn Greenwald anlässlich des jüngsten Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg hat nicht nur Geheimdienstler provoziert, sondern auch Journalisten. So fragten Patrick Beuth und Kai Biermann in einem Kommentar auf ZEIT ONLINE, ob sich Greenwald ob seiner Medienschelte überhaupt noch dem Journalismus zugehörig fühle. Jochen Wegner führte die Debatte in der ZEIT weiter: "Es ist für mich (…) schwer vorstellbar, dass Journalisten Anwälte eines Themas sind, dem sie sich professionell widmen."

Colorado’s Pot Shops Say They’ll Be Sold Out Any Day Now
A few days into the experiment, the new world of legal-recreational-marijuana sales in Colorado appears to be a big success — so much so that pot shops are finding it impossible to keep up with demand.
According to the Denver Post, at least 37 stores in Colorado were licensed to sell recreational pot to anyone 21 or over as of New Year’s Day. The Associated Press and others reported long lines outside Denver pot shops, with some eager customers forced to wait three to five hours before getting a chance to go inside, step up to the counter and make a purchase.

London - Von einer ungewöhnlichen Beobachtung, die sich beim Dreh einer Naturdokumentation ereignet haben soll, berichtet die britische Zeitung "The Sunday Times": Eine Gruppe junger Delfine reichte einen Kugelfisch herum. Die Tiere kauten abwechselnd an ihrem Fang und zeigten anschließend Symptome eines Drogenrauschs.

A Pasco County man spent new years day behind bars, after sheriff's deputies say he assaulted his live in girlfriend with a banana.
Authorities responded to 36-year old Joseph Smolinsky's home on Afton Lane in Port Richey early yesterday morning.

Echt jetzt? Wirklich? Die NSA forscht am Quantencomputer
Ein bisschen unverständlich ist es schon, dass die Medien sich auf die neueste NSA-Enthüllung stürzen, die gestern von der Washington Post veröffentlicht wurde. Demnach arbeite die NSA an der Entwicklung eines Quantencomputers, um Kryptoverfahren, die auf schwierigen mathematischen Problemen beruhen, brechen zu können.
Das würde funktionieren, weil mit Mitteln der Quanteninformatik bestimmte Probleme effizienter gelöst werden können als mit herkömmlichen Methoden – eines dieser Probleme ist die Bestimmung der Teiler einer zusammengesetzten Zahl. Auf einer solchen Faktorisierung beruhen Verfahren wie RSA, wo ausgenutzt wird, dass es extrem aufwändig ist, eine große Zahl, die aus einer Multiplikation zweier unbekannter Primzahlen entstanden ist, wieder in diese zu zerlegen.

Colorado pot shops net over $1 million on the first day of legal operation
Pot dispensaries in Colorado, where the regulated sale of marijuana became legal on January 1, recorded well over $1 million in sales on their first day of business.
Despite cold temperatures and intemperate weather, most shops reported long lines throughout the day, with some customers waiting in outside for hours to purchase marijuana legally.

Aktien von Unternehmen aus beteiligten US-Branchen profitieren, einzelne mit 70 Prozent Wertzuwachs
Washington - Nach der Legalisierung des Verkaufs von Cannabis im US-Bundesstaat Colorado sind die Aktienkurse mehrerer an der Produktion und der Vermarktung beteiligter Unternehmen am Donnerstag gestiegen. Den mit fast 70 Prozent größten Gewinnsprung verzeichnete das Unternehmen MediSwipe, das Zahlungssysteme für die Medizinbranche anbietet.
Die Aktie stieg auf 0,19 Dollar (knapp 0,14 Euro). Die Papiere des Unternehmens GreenGro Technologies, das Utensilien wie etwa spezielle Lampen zum Anbau von Cannabis anbietet, stiegen um mehr als 50 Prozent auf knapp 0,07 Dollar.

Strafrechtsprofessoren fordern: Legalize it!
Am Montag, 16. Dezember 2013, veröffentlichte die Frankfurter Allgemeine in ihrem Feuilleton einen Artikel von Oliver Tolmein unter dem Titel „Drogenfreigabe – Auch Ernst Jünger würde sich freuen“. Zu Beginn des Artikels heißt es wörtlich: „Drogenkonsum ist bei uns strafbar. Fast vierzig Prozent aller deutschen Strafrechtsprofessoren erklären diese Konzept jetzt als „gescheitert, sozialschädlich, unökonomisch“. Sie fordern: Legalize it!“
Nicht wahr ist die Feststellung, dass der Drogenkonsum bei uns (in Deutschland) strafbar ist. Der Erwerb und Besitz diverser Drogen ist in Deutschland strafbewehrt, der Konsum selbst ist in Deutschland – im Gegensatz zur Schweiz – nicht verboten und kann aus verfassungsrechtlichen Gründen auch nicht verboten werden. Wahr hingegen ist die Feststellung, dass das Konzept der Verbotspolitik „gescheitert, sozialschädlich und unökonomisch“ ist.

Legal or not, you could get fired for smoking pot
While marijuana may be legally purchased, legally possessed and legally smoked as of January 1, under Colorado law, it can also get you legally fired.
There is already a precedent for this in the state courts.
In 2010 a Colorado man was fired by his employer, Dish Network, for using medical marijuana off-duty. The Colorado Court of Appeals upheld the firing which is now being heard by the Colorado Supreme Court.
Amendment 64 gives employers the same discretion, allowing them to prohibit marijuana use both on and off the job.

Giant yellow duck explodes in Taiwan…again
A giant yellow duck on display in a northern Taiwan port exploded Tuesday, just hours before it was expected to attract a big crowd to count down the new year.
The 18-metre-tall (59-feet) duck on show at Keelung burst around noon and deflated into a floating yellow disc, only 11 days after it went on display.
