US-Gericht erlaubt Telefondatensammlung der NSA
Das massenhafte Sammeln von Telefondaten durch den Geheimdienst NSA ist einem US-Bundesgericht zufolge rechtmäßig. Es gebe keine Beweise dafür, dass die Regierung die Daten für etwas anderes als zur Terrorabwehr genutzt habe.
New York - Ein US-Richter hält die Sammlung von Telefonverbindungsdaten durch den Geheimdienst NSA für verfassungskonform. In seiner Entscheidung billigte der New Yorker Bundesbezirksrichter William Pauley die umstrittene Anti-Terror-Maßnahme. Die Bürgerrechtsvereinigung ACLU hatte gegen die millionenfache Erfassung der Telefondaten geklagt.

Glenn Greenwald: I defend Edward Snowden like MSNBC defends Obama ’24 hours a day’
Reporter Glenn Greenwald defended both his reporting on former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden and his opinion of Snowden’s actions in a testy interview with MSNBC host Kristen Welker on Thursday.
“Every journalist has an agenda,” Greenwald told Welker. “We’re on MSNBC now, where close to 24 hours a day the agenda of President [Barack] Obama and the Democratic Party are promoted, defended, glorified, the agenda of the Republican Party is undermined. That doesn’t mean the people who appear on MSNBC aren’t journalists. They are.”

Alan Dershowitz rips Edward Snowden: ‘We have an absolute right’ to spy on other countries
Harvard University law professor Alan Dershowitz criticized National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden on Thursday during a debate with Washington Post reporter Barton Gellman, who published Snowden’s first interview since being granted asylum in Russia earlier this year.
“He could have easily gone on 60 Minutes, and disclosed the existence of the program without disclosing the contents, some of which is extremely damaging to our national security,” Dershowitz told Hardball guest host Michael Smerconish, arguing that he could have released the information he compiled while working at the agency in a classified debriefing, instead of going to the Post and The Guardian.

Mehr als 130 Vorträge sind zu hören (und sollen auch live über das Internet übertragen werden), aber die sind nur ein Teil der Veranstaltung: Das ganze Treffen ist durchzogen von kleinen Spiel-, Arbeits- und Bastelecken. Hier können sich Gruppen mit kleinen Einzelprojekten befassen, zusammen löten, programmieren oder klönen.

Kokain war gestern: Südamerikanische Kartelle steigen massiv in den Handel mit gestohlenen Smartphones ein
In der Hauptstadt eines Landes, das für seinen Drogenhandel berüchtigt ist, war diese Szene nicht ungewöhnlich. Die kolumbianische Polizei hielt nach dem Hinweis eines Informanten einen Minivan auf, der gerade den Flughafen El Dorado in Bogota verlassen wollte. Im Laderaum des Fahrzeugs fanden die Ermittler, was sie suchten: dutzende Kisten mit wertvoller Schmuggelware.
Beschlagnahmt wurden in den Morgenstunden des 26. September 2012 aber nicht Kokain oder andere illegale Drogen. Die Kisten enthielten über 400 Smartphones der Marken Samsung, LG und BlackBerry – komplett mit Handbüchern und Ladegeräten. Als die Polizisten die Geräte einschalteten, wurden die Namen und Logos der amerikanischen Mobilfunkanbieter AT&T und Verizon angezeigt.

Uruguay's neighbors now considering legalization of pot
LIMA, Peru — Argentina has given the first sign that Uruguay’s groundbreaking cannabis reform just may have started a domino effect across Latin America.
Following the momentous vote by its smaller neighbor’s senate this month — making it the first nation in the world to completely legalize the soft drug — Argentina’s anti-drug czar Juan Carlos Molina has called for a public discussion in his country about emulating the measure.

Cape Canavarel - Zum zweiten Mal in der Geschichte der US-Raumfahrtbehörde Nasa mussten Astronauten an Heiligabend einen Außeneinsatz absolvieren. Mike Hopkins und Rick Mastracchio brachten in mehr als sieben Stunden - 60 Minuten länger als ursprünglich geplant - eine neue Kühlpumpe an der Internationalen Raumstation ISS an.

Edward Snowden, after months of NSA revelations, says his mission’s accomplished
The familiar voice on the hotel room phone did not waste words.
“What time does your clock say, exactly?” he asked. He checked the reply against his watch and described a place to meet.
“I’ll see you there,” he said.
Edward Joseph Snowden emerged at the appointed hour, alone, blending into a light crowd of locals and tourists. He cocked his arm for a handshake, then turned his shoulder to indicate a path. Before long he had guided his visitor to a secure space out of public view.

Google's Schaft robot wins Darpa rescue challenge
A robot developed by a Japanese start-up recently acquired by Google is the winner of a two-day competition hosted by the Pentagon's research unit Darpa.
Team Schaft's machine carried out all eight rescue-themed tasks to outscore its rivals by a wide margin.
Three of the other 15 teams that took part failed to secure any points at the event near Miami, Florida.

RSA comes out swinging, denies taking NSA's $10m to backdoor its crypto
RSA has hit back at allegations stemming from Edward Snowden's latest whistleblowing – specifically, the claim that it secretly took US$10m from the NSA in exchange for using the deliberately knackered Dual Elliptic Curve Deterministic Random Bit Generator (Dual EC DRBG) in its encryption products.
The EMC-owned security outfit said it started using Dual EC DRBG by default in 2004, sometime before the generator was standardised. By 2007 the algorithm was found to effectively have a backdoor in it that weakened the strength of any encryption that relied on it, making life easier for snoops. In September 2013, RSA told its customers to stop using the algorithm.
