The Simpsons House in LEGO is Now Official
LEGO company officials, perhaps forced to adjust their PR schedule by a leaked photograph, have announced the debut of The Simpsons LEGO construction set. The playset will be available in LEGO stores and online in February, and will cost $199.99 in the US, $229.99 in Canada, and various prices in Europe. The set comes with six minifigs (the Simpson family and Ned Flanders), but the Simpsons line of minifigs will have 16 figures in all, and they will be made available in May for US$3.99 each.

Mit Unterschriften Abstimmung über entsprechendes Gesetz erwirkt
Washington - Neben Colorado und Washington könnte Alaska dieses Jahr der dritte US-Staat werden, in dem Menschen legal Marihuana kaufen und konsumieren können. Eine Gruppe von Cannabis-Aktivisten sammelte dort deutlich mehr als die rund 30.000 benötigten Unterschriften, um die Abstimmung über ein entsprechendes Gesetz zu erwirken.

Hungarian photographer Adam Magyar doesn't work like most artists. He takes the world's most sophisticated photographic equipment, then hacks it with software he writes himself — all in order to twist our perception of time inside out. In this latest story from the digital publisher MATTER, Joshua Hammer discovers how Magyar's unique combination of technology and art challenges the way we understand the world. At one point, Magyar realized he needed a 'slit-scan' camera, 'the type used to determine photo finishes at racetracks and at Olympic sporting events by capturing a time sequence in one image.

European parliament invites Edward Snowden to testify via video
A European parliament committee has invited Edward Snowden to testify via video link in its investigation of US surveillance practices.
The justice and civil liberties committee voted 36-2 with one abstention on Thursday to seek testimony from the former NSA contractor, who has exposed the reach of the US secret surveillance apparatus.

Der Bund hat sein Reservoir an Krypto-Handys deutlich aufgestockt. Hatte die Bundesregierung vor drei Jahren erst rund 2000 Geräte mit Verschlüsselungsfunktionen für Sprach- und Datenkommunikation angeschafft, sind es inzwischen 12.000. Dies geht aus einer jetzt veröffentlichen Antwort der Bundesregierung auf eine Anfrage der Bundestagsfraktion der Linken hervor.

Kiloweise Kokain in Aldi-Märkten entdeckt
In fünf Berliner Aldi-Filialen ist eine große Menge Kokain gefunden worden. Die Drogen lagen offenbar in Bananenkisten aus einer Lieferung aus Südamerika, hieß es in mehreren Berichten unter Berufung auf Polizeiquellen. Offiziell bestätigte die Polizei den Fund von Kokain bei einem Berliner Discounter.
Insgesamt soll es sich um 140 Kilogramm Kokain handeln. Möglicherweise sind auch Filialen in Brandenburg betroffen.

Stephen Colbert shreds ‘buzzkill’ David Brooks’s argument against legal weed
Stephen Colbert returned from his winter hiatus in fine form Monday night, attacking New York Times columnist David Brooks for his recent anti-legalization column.
Colbert began by discussing the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in Colorado. After showing a clip in which an anchor declared that over $1 million of pot was sold on the first day it was legal to so, Colbert noted that that was “otherwise known as a ‘Full Nelson.’”

This entry weighs in at a magical 4043 bytes (8086 nibbles, 28,301 bits). It manages to implement most of the hardware in a 1980’s era IBM-PC using a few hundred fewer bits than the total number of transistors used to implement the original 8086 CPU.
If you are using OS X, the included sc-ioccc.terminal configuration file will correctly display console applications that use ANSI graphics.

US BACKDOORED our satellites, claim UAE
A French contract to supply intelligence satellites to the United Arab Emirates could be cancelled, with the UAE claiming it's discovered backdoors in US-supplied components of the birds.
Defence News, which broke the story, claims that the $US930 million contract could be scrapped, according to high-level UAE sources, if the issue can't be resolved. That would be a blow for prime contractor Airbus Defence and Space, and payload maker Thales Alenia Space.

Die Rede des NSA-Aufdeckers Glenn Greenwald anlässlich des jüngsten Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg hat nicht nur Geheimdienstler provoziert, sondern auch Journalisten. So fragten Patrick Beuth und Kai Biermann in einem Kommentar auf ZEIT ONLINE, ob sich Greenwald ob seiner Medienschelte überhaupt noch dem Journalismus zugehörig fühle. Jochen Wegner führte die Debatte in der ZEIT weiter: "Es ist für mich (…) schwer vorstellbar, dass Journalisten Anwälte eines Themas sind, dem sie sich professionell widmen."

Colorado’s Pot Shops Say They’ll Be Sold Out Any Day Now
A few days into the experiment, the new world of legal-recreational-marijuana sales in Colorado appears to be a big success — so much so that pot shops are finding it impossible to keep up with demand.
According to the Denver Post, at least 37 stores in Colorado were licensed to sell recreational pot to anyone 21 or over as of New Year’s Day. The Associated Press and others reported long lines outside Denver pot shops, with some eager customers forced to wait three to five hours before getting a chance to go inside, step up to the counter and make a purchase.

London - Von einer ungewöhnlichen Beobachtung, die sich beim Dreh einer Naturdokumentation ereignet haben soll, berichtet die britische Zeitung "The Sunday Times": Eine Gruppe junger Delfine reichte einen Kugelfisch herum. Die Tiere kauten abwechselnd an ihrem Fang und zeigten anschließend Symptome eines Drogenrauschs.
