Redefining 'Bird Brain' - Crow Shows Amazing Intelligence in Solving a Complex Puzzle

Multi-step puzzles can be difficult for humans, but what if I told you there was a bird that could solve them on its own?

In this BBC special, Dr. Alex Taylor has set up an eight-step puzzle to try and stump one of the smartest crows he's seen in captivity. They describe the puzzle as "one of the most complex tests of the animal mind ever."...

Glenn Greenwald's news website launches

We are very excited to welcome everyone to The Intercept, a publication of First Look Media (FLM). The Intercept, which the three of us created, is the first of what will be numerous digital magazines published by FLM.

As soon as we resolved to build The Intercept, we set out to recruit many of the journalists whose work we have long respected and admired: those who have a proven track record of breaking boundaries, taking risks, and producing innovative, rigorous journalism.

We have assembled a team of experienced and independent journalists and editors (see our masthead here). Our central mission is to hold the most powerful governmental and corporate factions accountable, and to do so, we will report on a wide and varied range of issues.

Furzende Kühe produzieren Stichflamme in Stall

Stephen Hawking: 'There Are No Black Holes'

Stephen Hawking has proposed a new solution to the black-hole firewall paradox, which has been vexing physicists for almost two years. The paradox troubles physicists because if the firewall scenario is correct, Einstein's general theory of relativity is flouted. But the classical theory black hole cannot be reconciled to the quantum mechanical prediction that energy and information can escape from a black hole. Now Hawking has proposed a tantalizingly simple solution to the paradox which allows both quantum mechanics and general relativity to remain intact — black holes simply do not have an event horizon to catch fire. The key to his claim is that quantum effects around the black hole cause spacetime to fluctuate too wildly for a sharp boundary surface to exist. As Hawking writes in his paper, 'The absence of event horizons mean that there are no black holes — in the sense of regimes from which light can't escape to infinity.'

Hong Kong tycoon offers $130 million to any man who marries his lesbian daughter

A Hong Kong tycoon may double a “marriage bounty” to find a male suitor for his gay daughter to US$130 million, despite his initial offer attracting 20,000 candidates, a report said.

Two years ago, wealthy property developer Cecil Chao made global headlines by offering a reward of HK$500 million ($65 million) to any man who could persuade daughter Gigi to marry.

He is now considering increasing his offer, a report in a Malaysian financial publication said.

Prisoner rats himself out with Facebook selfie of cell-grown cannabis

A Polish prisoner has taken one of the most head-desk-bang-bang selfies ever: a picture of himself, taken on a contraband mobile phone smuggled into the prison, showing a lush, equally contraband and definitely illegal cannabis plant he grew from seed in his cell.

According to Metro, Marcin Zendarski used the illegal smartphone to keep in touch with friends, watch TV shows and browse the web from an Austrian jail.

The U.S. Crackdown on Hackers Is Our New War on Drugs

Before Edward Snowden showed up, 2013 was shaping up as the year of reckoning for the much criticized federal anti-hacking statute, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (“CFAA”). The suicide of Aaron Swartz in January 2013 brought the CFAA into mainstream consciousness, so Congress held hearings about the case, and legislative fixes were introduced to change the law.

Finally, there seemed to be a newfound scrutiny of CFAA prosecutions and punishment for accessing computer data without or in excess of “authorization” — which affected everyone from Andrew “Weev” Auernheimer (disclosure: I’m one of his lawyers on appeal) to Chelsea Manning to Jeremy Hammond. Not to mention less illustrious personalities and everyday users, such as people who delete cookies from their browsers.
