NASA solves mystery of jelly doughnut-shaped rock on Mars
NASA announced this week that it has solved the mystery of the “jelly doughnut-shaped” rock that suddenly appeared in front of the Mars rover Opportunity earlier this year. The small white-ish rock with a deep red center was dubbed “Pinnacle Island” by scientists at NASA, who say the rock wasn't there one day, and then 12 Martian days later, it showed up in images that Opportunity sent back.

US-Banken dürfen mit Cannabis-Verkäufern handeln
Nach der Freigabe von Marihuana in Colorado hat die US-Regierung den Betreibern von Coffeeshops die Eröffnung von Bankkonten ermöglicht. Das Finanzministerium in Washington veröffentlichte am Freitag Richtlinien, wie Geldhäuser mit den staatlich lizenzierten Marihuana-Anbietern Geschäfte machen dürfen. Das Thema ist rechtlich äußerst heikel: Während Marihuana seit Jahresbeginn in Colorado und bald auch im Bundesstaat Washington vertrieben werden darf sowie 18 weitere Bundesstaaten das Rauschmittel für medizinische Zwecke freigegeben haben, stuft die Bundesregierung es weiter als illegale Droge ein.

Millionenbeute: Unbekannte rauben Drogenportal mit Bitcoin-Trick aus
Seit Tagen warnen Bitcoin-Plattformen vor einem Sicherheitsproblem. Die Betreiber der Online-Drogenbörse "Silk Road 2.0" haben diese Warnungen ignoriert und müssen dafür einen hohen Preis zahlen: Unbekannte haben ihnen digitales Geld im Millionenwert abgenommen.
Über eine Schwachstelle im Bitcoin-Überweisungssystem haben Unbekannte die Online-Drogenplattform "Silk Road 2.0" um knapp zwei Millionen Dollar betrogen. Am Donnerstag teilte einer der Betreiber des Handelsportals über "Reddit" mit : "Wir sind gehackt worden." Für ein bis zwei Tage soll die Plattform nun stillgelegt werden, bis die Hintergründe des Angriffs geklärt sind. "Silk Road 2.0" ist einer der prominentesten Ableger der Drogenbörse "Silk Road", die von US-Behörden im vergangenen Jahr geschlossen worden war. Das Portal ist dafür bekannt, dass dort vor allem mit illegalen Gütern wie Drogen und Waffen gehandelt wird. Es ist nur über das Anonymisierungs-Netzwerk Tor erreichbar.

Dieb stiehlt 350 Schuhe: Kein einziges Paar erwischt
Ein Unbekannter hat auf einem Autobahnrastplatz in Bayern 350 Schuhe aus einem geparkten Auto gestohlen, dabei aber kein einziges Paar erwischt. Es habe sich ausschließlich um linke Schuhe der Größe 37 gehandelt, teilte die Polizei in Nürnberg am Freitag mit.

EU-Parlamentarier entscheiden gegen Snowden
Das EU-Parlament verweigert Edward Snowden die Rückendeckung. Der Innenausschuss votiert in seiner Abstimmung zum NSA-Skandal gegen Sicherheitsgarantien und gegen Asyl für den Whistleblower. Seinen Unterstützern bleibt nur eine Hoffnung: die Öffentlichkeit.
Brüssel - Seine Hoffnungen auf Asyl in der EU und Schutz vor Auslieferung in die USA muss Edward Snowden wohl begraben. Der Innenausschuss des Europaparlaments verzichtete heute in seinem Abschlussbericht zum NSA-Skandal auf jegliche Forderung nach einer Sicherheitsgarantie für den Whistleblower.

Austrian Collection Society Pushing Members To Support Collecting Fees For Every Embedded Video
The EU Commission has just extended its deadline for comment on its copyright review/reform for an extra 30 days. Those possibly affected by any changes routed through this would do well to add their input, especially as a couple of the issues being considered would turn normal internet sharing into copyright infringement.

Florida lawmakers introduce bills to legalize medical marijuana
Florida state legislators introduced identical bills on Monday to legalize medical marijuana treatment in the 2014 legislative session, in a bid to win approval before a constitutional amendment on the issue comes up for a public vote in November.
Senators Jeff Clemens and Joe Saunders, both Democrats, brought numerous patients and their family members to the unveiling of their bill, which would effectively implement by statute the constitutional amendment that is on the November ballot

Brüssel/Wien - Es ist eine sensible Frage für Konsumenten, die Bauern und die Politik. Und es ist ein klein wenig paradox: Im EU-Parlament gab es eine Mehrheit gegen den Genmais 1507 und voraussichtlich auch im zuständigen EU-Ministerrat, der heute abstimmt (abstimmen sollen die fachfremden Europaminister, weil ein Treffen der Agrarminister im Jänner ausgefallen ist, Anm.). Dennoch darf die gentechnisch veränderte Maissorte Pioneer 1507 aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach demnächst in Europa angebaut werden.
