Computer Virus Hits U.S. Drone Fleet
A computer virus has infected the cockpits of America’s Predator and Reaper drones, logging pilots’ every keystroke as they remotely fly missions over Afghanistan and other warzones.
The virus, first detected nearly two weeks ago by the military’s Host-Based Security System, has not prevented pilots at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada from flying their missions overseas. Nor have there been any confirmed incidents of classified information being lost or sent to an outside source. But the virus has resisted multiple efforts to remove it from Creech’s computers, network security specialists say. And the infection underscores the ongoing security risks in what has become the U.S. military’s most important weapons system.

RIP Steve Jobs 1955-2011
Today I was in my living room playing with my son when on the TV news they announced Steve Jobs had passed away. I was shocked, I mean I knew he was ill, problems in the past with cancer. Didn’t he just step down as CEO yesterday? This can’t be true. I opened twitter on my iPhone and sure enough, there was the internet’s raw outpouring of emotion over a man who truly touched all of our lives.
I wrote my first lines of code on an apple, I don’t remember what it was called. Monochrome green monitor, big ol CPU with the keyboard integrated. I was in 6th grade at the time, and my math teacher taught me BASIC after class. We saved our cool role playing games onto 5 1/4″ floppies. Soon afterwards my grandmother got a Mac Classic, you know the one with the super tiny black and white screen? It had 3 1/2 inch floppies and was the bomb. I sort of broke up with Apple soon after, when I got my first 486 with Windows 3.1. It was all PC/Windows/Linux until a few years ago.

Monsanto Wins Patent Dispute Against Farmer Who Bought Legal Seeds
We've had numerous stories of Monsanto's rather aggressive patent enforcement efforts, and unfortunately it appears the company has chalked up another victory in the courts. Glyn Moody points us to the story of CAFC (the nation's patent appeals court) siding with Monsanto against yet another farmer.
The details of this story are really quite incredible. The farmer, Vernan Bowman, bought official Monsanto seeds and planted his crops. Yet, Monsanto has rules that say you can't re-use "Roundup Ready" seeds, but you can apparently sell "second-generation" seeds to grain elevators for use as "commodity seeds," and doesn't require that there be any restriction on the sale.

Trolls Don't Need To Be Anonymous, And Not All Anonymous People Are Trolls
Julian Sanchez points us to the latest in a series of ridiculously uninformed editorials whining about the evils of anonymity online. This one is by Gayle Falkenthal in the Washington Times. The premise, apparently, is that anonymity only made sense in the past, when the internet was "immature."
When the Internet was new, its nature bred the protective philosophy of embracing anonymity as a counterweight to the potential for sacrificing some of your personal privacy to participate.
The Internet has matured. Anonymity has become counterproductive and even damaging. If you’re willing to stand up and render a public opinion, you should reveal your identity. The time has come to limit the ability of people to remain anonymous. </p>

Life is a Cosmic Giggle on the Breath of the Universe - A Tour of Gordon Todd Skinner's Subterranean LSD Palace
There is no facile synthesis of the events that transpired at the Wamego missile silo between October 1 and November 4, 2000. The available information is a viscous solution of truths, half-lies, three-quarter truths, and outright lies, the fractionation of which yields no pure product. The dramatis personae are many and varied. The chemicals in question often obscure and untested. What is known is that in 1997, a virtuosic organic chemist named Leonard Pickard joined forces with Gordon Todd Skinner, the heir to a spring-manufacturing fortune, to organize what would later become the world’s most productive LSD laboratory. A laboratory that, according to some sources, produced 90 percent of the LSD in circulation, in addition to unknown quantities of MDMA, ALD-52, ergot wine, and quite possibly LSZ... but I’ll get to that later.
