Trolls Don't Need To Be Anonymous, And Not All Anonymous People Are Trolls
Julian Sanchez points us to the latest in a series of ridiculously uninformed editorials whining about the evils of anonymity online. This one is by Gayle Falkenthal in the Washington Times. The premise, apparently, is that anonymity only made sense in the past, when the internet was "immature."
When the Internet was new, its nature bred the protective philosophy of embracing anonymity as a counterweight to the potential for sacrificing some of your personal privacy to participate.
The Internet has matured. Anonymity has become counterproductive and even damaging. If you’re willing to stand up and render a public opinion, you should reveal your identity. The time has come to limit the ability of people to remain anonymous. </p>

Linz - Ein Antrag der FPÖ empört in der oberösterreichischen Gemeinde Ottensheim (Bezirk Urfahr-Umgebung) die anderen Fraktionen: Die Freiheitlichen verlangen darin wörtlich, dass für "Österreicher mit Migrationshintergrund und ohne Integrationswillen, welche das Freizeitgelände mit Müll und Exkrementen verwüsten", am Rodlspielplatz ein Grillverbot verhängt wird.

Klopapier Drucker aus Computerschrott
Heise trägt in diesem Jahr zum zweiten mal den c’t Wettbewerb namens “Mach flott den Schrott” aus. Endlich gab es mal einen Grund ein schon länger in meinem Kopf herumschwirrendes Projekt in die Tat umzusetzen.
Herausgekommen ist dabei der Toilettenpapier Drucker. Der Drucker hat eine Netzwerkanbindung und kann somit zum Beispiel RSS Feeds, Tweets, Facebook Nachrichten drucken. Der Kreativität was druckbare Text Quellen betrifft sind keine Grenzen gesetzt. Im folgenden Text versuche ich den Bau des Druckers so gut es geht zu dokumentieren. Fragen und Anregungen können über Kommentare gestellt bzw. geschrieben werden.

Anonymes Handeln muss auch im Internet möglich sein
In der vergangenen Woche haben wir über ein Papier des Arbeitskreis Innen in der CDU / CSU Bundestagsfraktion gebloggt, in dem anonyme Kommunikation im Netz von Innenpolitikern wie Hans-Peter Uhl und Wolfgang Bosbach abgelehnt wird: Eine anonyme Teilhabe am politischen Meinungs- und Willensbildungsprozess ist abzulehnen.
Heute überrascht eine Pressemitteilung des stellvertretenden Vorsitzenden der CDU/CSU-Bundestagsfraktion Michael Kretschmer, der das anders formuliert (Die finde ich nicht online, wurde per Mail verschickt):

Tor-ramdisk
Tor-ramdisk is an i686 uClibc-based micro Linux distribution whose sole purpose is to securely host a Tor server purely in RAM. For those not familiar with Tor, it is a system which allows the user to construct encrypted virtual tunnels which are randomly relayed between Tor servers (nodes) until the connection finally exits to its destination on the internet. The encryption and random relaying resist traffic analysis in that a malicious sniffer cannot easily discover where the traffic is coming from or what data it contains. While not perfect in its efforts to provide users with anonymity, Tor does help protect against unscrupulous companies, individuals or agencies from "watching us".

Erst vor wenigen Tagen hatte die Staatsanwaltschaft Wien bekannt gegeben, dass der Verfassungsschutz in der Causa der Angriffe gegen die Seiten von SPÖ, FPÖ und Grünen mittlerweile nicht mehr allgemein sondern ganz konkret gegen einzelne Personen ermittelt. Was man von solchen Ansagen hält, zeigt Anonymous Austria nun auf auf recht eigene Weise: Über den offiziellen Twitter-Account hat man rund 25.000 Datensätze österreichischer Polizisten veröffentlicht.

Dresdner Codex - "Weltuntergangsbuch" der Maya digitalisiert
Was für Wissenschaftler ein Rätsel darstellt, ist für Anhänger des Weltuntergang ein großer Tag: Am 21. Dezember 2012 geht der Kalender der mittelamerikanischen Maya-Indianer zu Ende - und damit die ganze Welt, wie manch einer vermutet. Einziger Beleg: eine rund 800 Jahre alte Handschrift der Maya, die nun digitalisiert wurde.
Dieses Buch befindet sich in der Dresdner Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek und ist nach deren Angaben eines der wertvollsten im Bestand.

Dumped in the desert ... Gaddafi’s yellowcake stockpile
Sitting in row after row, each 15 long by four high, the blue barrels are as frightening as any remnant of the Gaddafi regime.
Some are marked radioactive, as were the open plastic bags alongside.
The powder they contain appears to be yellowcake uranium from neighbouring Niger. Yet when they were discovered by advancing rebel forces last week, they were abandoned, in tumbledown warehouses protected only by a low wall.

This week on Listening Post: A change of guard at Al Jazeera. What does Wadah Khanfar's resignation mean for the network? Also, Peru and the ideological battle on the airwaves.
When the former director-general of Al Jazeera, Wadah Khanfar, announced on Twitter that he was leaving the network, the news media immediately began speculating why. The New York Times, amongst others, linked his departure to leaked US diplomatic cables that appeared to show Khanfar had altered Al Jazeera's coverage at the request of the US government.
The focus then turned to his successor, Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, and whether the network was losing its independence with his appointment.

TSA Scanners Can’t Seem to Detect Your Concealed Weapons Through Shiny Clothes
It never stops. Caught somewhere between hilarious and infuriating, Marilyn W. Thompson with the Washington Post discovered that her shiny shirt prevented the roughly $150,000 TSA scanner from doing its job. You mean wearing my late-90s shiny suit means EXTRA gropings??
Thompson remarked on her confusion that these scanners can pick up bladed weapons and ass explosives but can't handle a shiny shirt from Banana Republic.

Satellitenabsturz
Die NASA hat ihre Vorhersage zum Absturz des Erdbeobachtungssatelliten "UARS" erneut präzisiert. Statt wie noch bis vor Kurzem angenommen, wird der Satellit nicht in der Nacht von Freitag auf Samstag, sondern am Samstagmorgen in die Erdatmsphäre eintreten.
