Russia vote-rigging protests in Vladivostok and Moscow
Russia's opposition is holding rallies to protest against what it says were rigged elections on 4 December.
In the first of the day's rallies in the far eastern city of Vladivostok, regional MP Artyom Samsonov said the election results should be cancelled.
In the capital alone, organisers say some 50,000 people are expected to gather on Sakharov Avenue.

Odd Things to Be on a Leash
BuzzFeed collected this silly little gallery full of hilarious images of odd things on leashes. Some of them are questionable in terms of strangeness (people leash their kids all the time, right?) while others are truly weird, and really make you wonder what we humans will be leashing up next?

The Large Hadron Collider has been recreated in Lego
Sasha Mehlhase, a post doc from the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen has spent approximately 81 hours of work end EURO 2,000 to build a model of CERN's Large Hadron Collider's Atlas detector...out of LEGO bricks. All in all 9,500 LEGO brics were used on the model which is made in a 1:50 scale. His idea is to use the model for alternative learning - fx on events such as the Culture Night in Copenhagen. Sasha Mehlhase is currently working on a manual for construction of his model, so it can be reproduced.

More And More Internet Infrastructure Players Coming Out To Say How Bad SOPA/PIPA Are
We've noted in the past that most of the people who actually understand the basic internet infrastructure have come out against SOPA and PIPA. That includes both individuals and companies (such as OpenDNS and Dyn), but it appears that we may be reaching a tipping point with tons and tons of internet infrastructure companies speaking out against these bills. We've already talked about the massive GoDaddy backlash... but it's interesting to note that many registrars and hosting companies are using this as an opportunity to speak out against SOPA and PIPA. Hover, Dreamhost, NameCheap and Name.com have all made explicit statements on their blogs. Back in the DNS space, EasyDNS has written a blistering anti-SOPA post on its blog:
If this becomes law, it's a short stretch from SOPA to NODA (No Online Dissent Anywhere) and if you think I'm a nutcase for saying so, I'd like to remind everybody what happened just over a year ago, when US politicians were tripping over themselves to shut down wikileaks (a royal fiasco in which this company was embroiled) and to this day, they have not been charged with a crime anywhere.

GoDaddy Drops SOPA Support After Customer Revolt
Domain registrar and hosting company GoDaddy has dropped its support for the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). The change in position follows the protests of thousands of customers who threatened to transfer their domains to competitors. In a statement released today the company now says it “will support it when and if the Internet community supports it.”
sopaA list of SOPA-supporting companies published earlier this week spurred a variety of customer initiatives.
Most prominent was the campaign against domain registrar GoDaddy that started on Reddit yesterday. Within hours hundreds of people voiced their support for the initiative to transfer domain names away from GoDaddy.
The CEO of the famous Cheezeburger network quickly joined and threatened to move 1000+ domains, and many other big names including Wikipedia followed the example. In addition, nearly all of GoDaddy’s top competitors recognized the great marketing initiative and offered coupon codes to those who want to make the switch.

Nigeria on alert as Shell announces worst oil spill in a decade
The oil company says up to 40,000 barrels of crude oil was spilled 75 miles off the coast of the Niger delta
Nigerian coastal and fishing communities were on Thursday put on alert after Shell admitted to an oil spill that is likely to be the worst in the area for a decade, according to government officials..
The company said up to 40,000 barrels of crude oil was spilled on Wednesday while it was transferred from a floating oil platform to a tanker 75 miles off the coast of the Niger delta.
All production from the Bonga field, which produces around 200,000 barrels a day, was last night suspended. "Early indications show that less than 40,000 barrels of oil have leaked in total. Spill response procedures have been initiated and emergency control and spill risk procedures are up and running," said Tony Okonedo, a Shell Nigeria spokesman.

Go Daddy boycott threat for backing hated anti-piracy law
Internet users have called for a boycott of web hosting giant Go Daddy over its public support of the Stop Online Piracy Act in the US.
While the company has publicly supported SOPA and similarly controversial proposed legislation for months, its position went largely unnoticed until a thread on Reddit gained legs yesterday.
User "selfprodigy" said he planned to move 51 domain names he has registered with Go Daddy to another registrar, adding: "I'm suggesting Dec 29th as move your domain away from GoDaddy day because of their support of SOPA. Who's with me?"
