Hungary police detain opposition MPs in chain protest

Hungarian police have broken up a demonstration by green liberal opposition MPs who chained themselves together outside parliament.

Former Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany was among several MPs detained by police at the scene in Budapest, Reuters news agency says.

The LMP party activists were blocking the parliament's car park, trying to prevent MPs entering, reports say.

EFF reverse engineers Carrier IQ

At this point we have a fairly good idea of what Carrier IQ is, and which manufacturers and carriers see fit to install it on their phones, but the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) — the preeminent protector of your digital rights — has taken it one step further and reverse engineered some of the program’s code to work out what’s actually going on.

There are three parts to a Carrier IQ installation on your phone: The program itself, which captures your keystrokes and other “metrics”; a configuration file, which varies from handset to handset and carrier to carrier; and a database that stores your actions until it can be transmitted to the carrier. Now, the Carrier IQ program is a binary application and fairly hard to reverse engineer, and the database sounds like it’s stored in RAM and thus hard to obtain — but the configuration profile… well, it turns out that that is very easy to crack.

Physiker entdecken neues Teilchen

How SOPA's 'circumvention' ban could put a target on Tor

A little-noticed section of the Stop Online Piracy Act could make it illegal to distribute Tor and other software that can "circumvent" attempts by the U.S. government to block pirate Web sites.

The controversial Hollywood-backed copyright bill allows injunctions to be filed against "any" person, nonprofit organization, or company that distributes a "product or service" that can be used to circumvent or bypass blockades erected against alleged pirate Web sites such as ThePirateBay.org.

THE GINGRICH FILES

Newt Gingrich, the 2012 GOP candidate who takes pride in being the most blatant hypocrite in the race thus far, somehow actually has a chance. This is probably due to the lack of knowledge that the brainwashed citizenry of the United States have about him.

So let’s take a look at what this American “patriot” has done and said, shall we?

Newt Gingrich was the 58th Speaker of the House from January 4, 1995 – January 3, 1999 under President Bill Clinton. During his term as Speaker of the House, eighty-four ethics charges were filed against him. After an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, he was forced to pay $300,000. According to Wikipedia, Mr. Gingrich was the first Speaker of the House ever to be disciplined for ethical wrongdoing. In January of 1997, Mr. Gingrich admitted to giving inaccurate, incomplete, and unreliable statements to the committee. The House Ethics Committee concluded that the inaccurate information supplied to investigators was an “intentional or … reckless” disregard of House rules.

For 28 years, the congress is organized by the community and appreciates all kinds of participation. You are encouraged to contribute by volunteering, setting up and attending hands-on events or presenting your own projects to fellow hackers.

Some basic survival guidelines might come in handy for everything not answered in our 28C3 FAQ. Like last year we search for helpers in our distributed congress program, no nerd left behind. Updated information are covered by the CCC Events Blog or via Twitter (@CCC).

'Swindlers and thieves': Anti-corruption blogger challenges Putin after leaving Russian jail

Opposition leader Alexei Navalny used his release from jail on Wednesday to call on Russians to unite against Vladimir Putin whom he said would try to snatch victory in a March 4 presidential election that was sure to be unfair.

Navalny, who has harnessed a mood change among Russia's urban youth against Putin's 12-year rule, was greeted by chants of 'Navalny, Navalny' and applause from supporters who braved a blizzard to await his release from a Moscow police station.

Initially weary and dazzled by scores of television camera lights, Navalny swiftly embarked on a dissection of the disputed December 4 parliamentary election, brandishing his slur of Putin's ruling party as a collection of "swindlers and thieves."

Finsternis in Russland - Pressefreiheits-Watchdog
