Österreich: Outsourcen der Speicherung von Vorratsdaten in die USA
´Während des Verfahrens um die Vorratsdatenspeicherung am Europäischen Gerichtshof (EuGH) wurde deutlich, dass ein Outsourcen der Speicherung von Vorratsdaten an Vertragspartner möglich ist – möglicherweise sogar an amerikanische Firmen, was den amerikanischen Behörden unbeschränkten Zugriff auf die gespeicherten Daten ermöglichen würde.
Österreich ist ein Beispiel eines EU-Mitgliedstaats, in dem die Vorratsdatenspeicherung bereits vorhanden ist. Deshalb hat die österreichische NGO „Initiative für Netzfreiheit“ eine Anfrage an die nationale Datenschutzkommission (DSK) gestellt, ob die österreichischen Service Provider Drittfirmen, möglicherweise gar amerikanische Dienstleister, mit der Speicherung der Vorratsdaten beauftragt haben.

The NSA Admits It Analyzes More People's Data Than Previously Revealed
As an aside during testimony on Capitol Hill today, a National Security Agency representative rather casually indicated that the government looks at data from a universe of far, far more people than previously indicated.
Chris Inglis, the agency's deputy director, was one of several government representatives—including from the FBI and the office of the Director of National Intelligence—testifying before the House Judiciary Committee this morning. Most of the testimony largely echoed previous testimony by the agencies on the topic of the government's surveillance, including a retread of the same offered examples for how the Patriot Act and Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act had stopped terror events.

Monsanto zieht Gentechnik-Anträge in EU zurück
Monsanto gibt sich geschlagen: Der US-Konzern will seine Anträge für Gen-Pflanzen in der EU zurückziehen. Der Grund sei die fehlende kommerzielle Perspektive.
Der US-Agrarkonzern Monsanto zieht alle ausstehenden Zulassungsanträge für den Anbau gentechnisch veränderter Nutzpflanzen in der Europäischen Union zurück. Grund sei die fehlende kommerzielle Perspektive, sagte der für Europa zuständige Manager Jose Manuel Madero. "Wir werden die Anträge in den kommenden Monaten zurücknehmen."
Betroffen seien fünf Anträge für genetisch veränderten Mais, einer für Sojabohnen und einer für Zuckerrüben. Dagegen werde man weiter eine Erneuerung der Zulassung für die Maissorte MON810 anstreben. Sie ist bislang die einzige genetische veränderte Nutzpflanze, die kommerziell in Europa angebaut wird. Ein Sprecher der EU-Kommission bestätigte, dass Monsanto die EU über die Pläne unterrichtet habe.

First tests of '130mph' lawnmower
The first test runs of a lawnmower that could reach speeds of more than 130mph have taken place.
The vehicle, made by Honda for Top Gear magazine, goes from 0-60mph (95km/h) in roughly four seconds.

Gazprom-Chef will iPad um 3,7 Millionen Dollar
Für Stirnrunzeln sorgt derzeit eine Ausschreibung, die auf der russischen Gazprom-Seite eingestellt wurde. So möchte der Chef des Gasproduzenten ein Tablet auf iOS-Basis, das aber auch alle Desktop-Funktionalitäten abbildet. Das Super-Tablet für Gazprom-Chef Alexey Miller ist dem Konzern 3,7 Millionen Dollar wert.

Totenköpfe: Rasche Beisetzung geplant
Nach der Entdeckung eines makaberen Oberwarter „Privatmuseum“ mit insgesamt mehr als 100 ausgestellten Totenköpfen und Knochen, sollen die Gebeine nun wieder beigesetzt werden. Der Termin ist noch für diese Woche vorgesehen.
Die Knochen stammen aus dem Karner (Gebeinhaus, Anm.) der Wallfahrtskirche Maria Weinberg (Bezirk Güssing) - mehr dazu in Mann hortete Totenköpfe in Wohnung. Der Medienrummel in der Gemeinde habe sich wieder gelegt. „Aber es ist natürlich noch immer Gesprächsthema Nummer Eins“, meinte ein Gemeindemitarbeiter am Mittwoch. Die Gebeine, die momentan von der Polizei verwahrt werden, sollen noch diese Woche gesegnet und wieder beigesetzt werden, hieß es aus der Pfarre.

Austrian man charged after 56 human skulls are found at his home
Police say 47-year-old had taken skulls and other bones from church cemetery and created museum
Police in the province of Burgenland said the relics were taken without authorisation from a church cemetery and had now been returned.
The 47-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, came to the attention of police when he tried to sell three skulls and two thigh bones at a flea market.

HBO meldet VLC Player als illegalen Download bei Google
Der amerikanische Fernsehsender HBO macht Fehler bei der Benutzung der DMCA-Takedown-Meldungen von Google. Unter anderem forderte das Unternehmen den Betreiber dazu auf, Downloadangebote zum freien VLC Media Player aus der Suchmaschine zu entfernen. Auch andere Inhalte, an denen der TV-Konzern keine Rechte hat, wurden durch die Hand von HBO gemeldet.

SourceForge’s new Installer bundles program downloads with adware
If you have been downloading programs from SourceForge in the last days, you may have noticed that some do not provide you with direct downloads of the programs anymore. Instead, you download something called SourceForge Installer which bundles the software with third party offers used for monetization.
This is in fact similar to how some download portals are offering downloads right now. Programs like FileZilla or Hotspot Shield have joined SourceForge's DevShare program which is currently in beta. It aims to offer a new funding option for Open Source projects.
