HBO meldet VLC Player als illegalen Download bei Google
Der amerikanische Fernsehsender HBO macht Fehler bei der Benutzung der DMCA-Takedown-Meldungen von Google. Unter anderem forderte das Unternehmen den Betreiber dazu auf, Downloadangebote zum freien VLC Media Player aus der Suchmaschine zu entfernen. Auch andere Inhalte, an denen der TV-Konzern keine Rechte hat, wurden durch die Hand von HBO gemeldet.

SourceForge’s new Installer bundles program downloads with adware
If you have been downloading programs from SourceForge in the last days, you may have noticed that some do not provide you with direct downloads of the programs anymore. Instead, you download something called SourceForge Installer which bundles the software with third party offers used for monetization.
This is in fact similar to how some download portals are offering downloads right now. Programs like FileZilla or Hotspot Shield have joined SourceForge's DevShare program which is currently in beta. It aims to offer a new funding option for Open Source projects.

W-Lan-Daten: Google kopiert Passwörter unverschlüsselt auf eigene Server
Die Backup-Funktion von Googles Betriebssystem Android kopiert Passwörter für W-Lan-Netze auf Server des Konzerns - unverschlüsselt. Entwickler warnen seit Tagen vor dem Leck, Universitäten sind alarmiert, Google schweigt. Der Konzern könnte Millionen Kennwörter besitzen.
Das Passwort zum eigenen Drahtlos-Netzwerk sollte man nie mit Fremden teilen, rät Google. Der Konzern warnt in einer Anleitung, man würde ja auch nie einem Fremden "den Schlüssel zum eigenen Haus geben". Bei der eigenen Backup-Funktion des Android-Systems missachtet Google diesen Hinweis: Der Dienst kopiert die W-Lan-Passwörter standardmäßig unverschlüsselt auf Google-Server. Betroffen sind alle Netzwerke, mit denen das jeweilige Android-Smartphone oder Tablet je verbunden war.

NSA-Spähprogramm: Friedrich fordert Deutsche zu mehr Datenschutz auf - LOL
Er steht in der NSA-Affäre als Innenminister seit Wochen unter Druck. Doch Hans-Peter Friedrich will von einer Verantwortung nichts wissen: Die Deutschen müssten selber mehr für den Schutz ihrer Daten tun. Die Ausspäh-Technik existiere nun einmal.
Berlin - Bundesinnenminister Hans-Peter Friedrich nimmt in der Spähaffäre nicht sich selbst, sondern die Bürger in die Pflicht. Der CSU-Politiker rief die Deutschen dazu auf, selbst mehr für den Schutz ihrer Daten zu tun.

PRISM: EFF und 19 weitere Organisationen reichen Sammelklage gegen NSA ein
Die US amerikanische Bürgerrechtsorganisation Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) hat gestern eine Sammelklage gegen die NSA eingereicht. Die Sammelklage 19 unterschiedlicher Organisationen richtet sich im Kern gegen das (verfassungswidrige) Übermitteln und Speichern von Verbindungsdaten samt Zeit- und Standortbestimmung – also ganz ähnlich unserer Vorratsdatenspeicherung. Das Augenmerk liegt hier auf dem Mobilfunk-Provider Verizon, der durch den Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), dem US Gericht zur Überwachung der Auslandsgeheimdienste, zu dieser verdachtslosen Speicherung verpflichtet wurde.

NSA-Überwachungsskandal: Arbeitet der BND mit PRISM-Software?
Das ARD-Politikmagazin FAKT stellte in seiner Sendung vom Dienstag die Behauptung auf, dass der Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) mit PRISM-Software arbeitet. Basis dieser Aussage ist die Tatsache, dass eine nicht mehr existente "Gesellschaft für technische Sonderlösungen" (GTSL) Software der Boeing-Tochter Narus an das BND verkaufte.
Den Hintergrund der FAKT-Meldung bildet die Entdeckung des US-amerikanischen Whistleblowers Mark Klein zum Jahreswechsel 2002/2003, dass der Telefonkonzern AT&T in seinem Datenknoten in San Francisco ein Abhörsystem namens Narusinsight einsetzte.

Yahoo wins battle over Prism court papers
Details of the official justification for the US National Security Agency's wide-ranging Prism surveillance programme look set to be revealed.
Yahoo has won a legal fight that will see papers from a key 2008 court case declassified and published.
The 2008 case is widely seen as pivotal in letting the NSA establish Prism and start gathering data on web use.

NSA Even Spied on Google Maps Searches, Documents Suggest
With its PRISM Internet surveillance program, the National Security Agency can reportedly monitor targets’ emails and do live surveillance of Google searches and other data. Now, the latest batch of revealed secret documents suggests the agency may have the ability to spy on Google Maps use, too.
In recent days, Brazilian newspaper O Globo has been publishing details about the NSA’s monitoring of email and phone call metadata across Latin America. O Globo, working in partnership with the Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald, has been revealing information gleaned from secret NSA documents disclosed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. The same trove of documents has been the source of a series of explosive scoops that have put the spotlight on the extent of the NSA’s ability to monitor Internet and phone communications in the United States and internationally.

North Sea Jazz Festival: Die Leiche zuckt und zuckt
Jazz ist tot? Nicht im Geringsten. Ob in Perugia, Montreux, Nizza oder gerade in Rotterdam - die Massen strömen zu den großen Jazzfestivals wie dem North Sea Jazz. Dort zeigten sich tausend Musiker ziemlich lebendig. Und ein Stargast überraschte sogar den Veranstalter.
Dafür, dass der Jazz schon seit Jahren für tot erklärt wird, versammeln sich ziemlich viele Menschen um die Leiche. Jedes Jahr um diese Zeit finden in ganz Europa die großen Jazzfestivals statt - und egal, ob in Perugia, Montreux oder Nizza - die Massen strömen. Um den Kadaver zu bestaunen? Oder vielleicht doch, um zu sehen, dass er noch zuckt.
Am eindrucksvollsten lässt sich das wohl in den Niederlanden besichtigen. Seit 1976 findet dort immer am zweiten Juliwochenende das North Sea Jazz Festival statt, erst in Den Haag, seit sieben Jahren im Messezentrum Ahoy in Rotterdam.

Use Google as a Proxy Server to Bypass Paywalls, Download Files
If you have trouble accessing a web page either because the website is blocked at your workplace, or because that page happens to be behind a paywall, there are a couple of undocumented Google proxy servers that may help you read that page.
When you access any page via one of these Google proxies, the content of that page gets downloaded on Google servers and then served to you. The lesser-known gmodules.com proxy, discussed later, will even allow you to download documents, videos and other web files that are otherwise blocked.
