The U.S. Crackdown on Hackers Is Our New War on Drugs
Before Edward Snowden showed up, 2013 was shaping up as the year of reckoning for the much criticized federal anti-hacking statute, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (“CFAA”). The suicide of Aaron Swartz in January 2013 brought the CFAA into mainstream consciousness, so Congress held hearings about the case, and legislative fixes were introduced to change the law.
Finally, there seemed to be a newfound scrutiny of CFAA prosecutions and punishment for accessing computer data without or in excess of “authorization” — which affected everyone from Andrew “Weev” Auernheimer (disclosure: I’m one of his lawyers on appeal) to Chelsea Manning to Jeremy Hammond. Not to mention less illustrious personalities and everyday users, such as people who delete cookies from their browsers.

Photo of 'tandem' toilets at Sochi Olympics goes viral
At least one Olympic bathroom seems to be flush with toilets. This photo taken on Friday Jan. 17, 2014, shows two toilets at the cross-country skiing and biathlon center for next monthÌs Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Although two toilets and only one stall like this are not common in Russia, social media users have responded by posting other pictures of toilets standing side by side. One said this was standard at Russian soccer stadiums.
When BBC reporter Steve Rosenberg went to use the bathroom at the cross-country skiing and biathlon center for next month's Winter Olympics in Sochi, he found two toilets but only one stall.
His tweeted picture instantly became a national joke.

Washington - US-Präsident Barack Obama setzt sich weiterhin nicht für die Legalisierung von Marihuana durch das amerikanische Bundesgesetz ein. Das stellte das Weiße Haus am Mittwoch klar, nachdem Obama in einem Interview gesagt hatte, das Rauschmittel sei nicht gefährlicher als Alkohol.

In a windowless basement room decorated with photographs of farmers clutching freshly harvested vegetables, three polo-shirt-and-slacks-clad Monsanto executives, all men, wait for a special lunch. A server arrives and sets in front of each a caprese-like salad—tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, lettuce—and one of the execs, David Stark, rolls his desk chair forward, raises a fork dramatically, and skewers a leaf. 50 Cent pro Monat statt "Festplattenabgabe"
Um den seit Jahren andauernden Streit über die "Festplattenabgabe" zu beenden, hat sich die unter anderem von den Geräteherstellern Hewlett Packard (HP) und Samsung und dem Händler DiTech gegründete "Plattform für ein modernes Urheberrecht" etwas Neues einfallen lassen. Sie schlägt einen Kulturbeitrag von 50 Cent pro Monat durch jeden Haushalt vor.
Damit sollen an Geräte und Speichermedien gebundene Urheberrechtsabgaben wie die "Leerkassettenvergütung", die Reprografievergütung und die strittige "Festplattenabgabe" ersetzt und Kreative für private Kopien ihrer Werke entschädigt werden, sagten Gregor Gessner, Mitglied der Geschäftsführung von HP Österreich, und Samsung-Managerin Martina Friedl am Mittwoch bei einem Pressegespräch in Wien.

Browser Chrome als Abhörzentrale nutzbar
Ein Fehler in Googles Browser erlaubt es Angreifern, das Rechnermikrofon ohne Wissen des Nutzers zum Mitschneiden seiner Gespräche zu verwenden. Das Leck ist dem Hersteller seit Monaten bekannt, aber bisher nicht behoben.
