Gunfire in Libya capital as protesters march
Militias loyal to Muammar Gadhafi fired in the air today to disperse marches by regime opponents defying a fierce clampdown to attempt their first major protest in the Libyan capital Tripoli in days. Across rebellious cities in the east, thousands held rallies in support of the Tripoli protesters.
Protesters streamed out of a mosque in central Tripoli after prayers, chanting for Gaddafi's resignation, and they were confronted by a force of troops and militiamen near Green Square, said one witness. The militiamen fired in the air, sending some in the anti-Gaddafi crowd running, he said.

Libyan crackdown 'escalates' - UN
# 1259: Eyewitnesses in Tripoli say that security forces are now shooting at protesters in the capital's suburbs. \r
1253: Libya's state TV shows footage of what it says is Tripoli's "Green Square now". There are about 50 demonstrators at most in the shot, carrying pictures of Col Gaddafi. Someone is heard shouting pro-Gaddafi slogans and chanting "Popular revolution" and "We are Libyans".

[13.42 Uhr] In der libyschen Hauptstadt Tripolis eröffneten Soldaten das Feuer, als etwa 500 Demonstranten zum Grünen Platz zog. Die Regime-Gegner riefen: "Es gibt nur einen Gott und der Märtyrer ist der Liebling Gottes." Sie bekundeten ihre Solidarität mit der Stadt Bengasi, die inzwischen nicht mehr von den Regierungstruppen kontrolliert wird. Ein Augenzeuge sagte, die Soldaten hätten zuerst nur in die Luft geschossen. Ob es Opfer gab, ist bisher unklar.
