Tallest man benefits from press

His extraordinary height trapped Leonid Stadnik in a tiny Ukrainian village for years, but now the 8-foot-4 man is seeing his horizons expand to match his size. As he grew, his life seemed to be shrinking. He had to stop working as a veterinarian on a cattle farm three years ago after his feet were frostbitten because he couldn't afford proper shoes. Living on a $30 monthly pension, he tried to fill his days by gardening and helping out at his mother's cramped house.

Time to dump MP3s?

There is no reason to defend MP3, no reason why everyone who currently listens to MP3s stored on their hard drive should not move to something significantly better. The resulting files were small enough to be traded over the net, and MP3 was the format used by Napster and other file-sharing and peer-to-peer networks in the late 1990's. It is still the one format that almost anything will play, a fact that has given it a lease of life it really does not deserve.

There are many things wrong with MP3 and only one thing right.

The right thing is that it does not come with any form of digital rights management.

'Internet's first blood sport'

The messages — with their fractured syntax and wild promises — are a familiar sight in e-mail inboxes. Sent primarily from Nigeria, they promise recipients up to tens of millions of dollars if they agree to take part in an arcane banking scheme.

Naive victims — spurred by promises of vast wealth that always remains tantalizingly out of reach — endure a constant drain of money as the scammers invent an endless series of fees and commissions, which will only end when the victim pulls out of the scam or is penniless. It's often referred to as the 419 scam, after the section of the Nigerian penal code it violates.

A strong odor led airline officials to what they believe is the 40 pounds of halibut a traveler reported missing from his checked bags two weeks ago.

Brenee Davis, a general manager for Continental Airlines in Anchorage, said the company's baggage handlers discovered "a ton of rotting fish" under a luggage conveyor belt recently at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.
