Town To Use Surveillance Cams

A Florida town will soon have cameras and computers running background checks on every car and driver that passes through.

Police Chief Clay Walker said cameras will take infrared photos recording a car's tag number, then software will automatically run the numbers through law enforcement databases. A 911 dispatcher is alerted if the car is stolen or is the subject of a "be on the lookout" warning.

This Is Your Government On Drugs

It sounds a bit like the answer to one of those old late-night, "so whatever happened to …" questions. Tommy Chong, 65-year-old grandfather, the lesser known half of the goofy late-70s burnout comedy duo Cheech and Chong, was convicted of the illegal sale of drug paraphernalia over the Internet (i.e. he marketed a line of glass bongs). In a bit of priceless comedic irony, the investigation was code-named Operation Pipe Dreams. Chong was sentenced to 9 months in prison on the second anniversary of September 11th.

Within hours of a decision by U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel allowing the Santa Cruz, Ca.-based Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana to resume growing marijuana and distributing it to its patients, Attorney General John Ashcroft took time away from fighting the war on terrorism to petition the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the federal appellate ruling underlying the judge's decision.

Video of Bush using unsuspecting woman as human Kleenex

That's how arrogant our President is. During a commercial break on the David Letterman show, producer Maria Pope was on stage and discussing something with Letterman, and while she was standing there in front of Bush, George leaned forward, grabbed the back of her sweater and used it to clean his glasses. Check out the Quicktime video.

Blog-Tracking May Gain Ground Among U.S. Intelligence Officials

Blogs, short for Web logs, are personal online journals. Individuals post them on Web sites to report or comment on news especially, but also on their personal lives or most any subject.

Some blogs are whimsical and deal with "soft" subjects. Others, though, are cutting edge in delivering information and opinion.

Father of the IPod

Sunday's New York Times feature on Apple, Steve Jobs and the iPod touches on one of the weirdest open secrets in Silicon Valley: The unacknowledged father of the iPod is engineer Tony Fadell.

According to the Times, "(The iPod) was put together starting in 2001 by hardware designers led by Tony Fadell, a young engineer who had worked at the Apple spinoff General Magic, at Philips Electronics and briefly at RealNetworks, led by Rob Glaser, who has developed the Rhapsody music service.

Tree Wave

Tree Wave consists of two members: Paul Slocum and Lauren Gray. To say Paul has an interest in 80s electronics is an understandment. He takes a Commodore 64, an Atari 2600 (as a synthcart and a sequencer), a Compaq Portable II, and an Epson LQ500 dot matrix printer which he reprogrammed as sound generators. Paul utilizes all of his creations to make a very interesting sound that blends nicely with Gray’s warm lush vocals. According to the band’s website, they are more influenced by guitar based bands than electronic bands.
