Die Besatzungen der verschiedenen "Enterprise"-Raumschiffe können sich bei ihren kosmischen Abenteuern auf zahlreiche ausgefeilte technische Errungenschaften verlassen. Viele davon bauen zumindest auf wissenschaftlichen Fundamenten auf. Der NASA-Physiker David Batchelor hat schon vor geraumer Zeit untersucht, welche Star-Trek-Errungenschaften machbar erscheinen.

"Bee Gees"-Sänger Maurice Gibb gestorben
Maurice Gibb, Sänger der "Bee Gees" und Kultfigur der Disko-Pop-Generation der 70er Jahre, ist tot. Der Musiker starb 53-jährig an den Folgen eines Herzinfarkts, wie seine Familie heute in London mitteilte. Gibb war am Donnerstag zusammengebrochen und in ein Krankenhaus in Miami eingeliefert worden.

Internet browser that quadruples surf speed wins Irish science prize
A computer browser that is said to least quadruple surfing speeds on the Internet has won the top prize at an Irish exhibition for young scientists, it was announced on Saturday.
Adnan Osmani, 16, a student at Saint Finian's College in Mullingar, central Ireland spent 18 months writing 780,000 lines of computer code to develop the browser. Known as "XWEBS", the system works with an ordinary Internet connection using a 56K modem on a normal telephone line.

Want to know how RIAA.org was hacked?
wo weeks ago the Recording Industry Association of America website was defaced.Twice. Even more embarrassing, the crackers installed pirate music files on the site for download. But how? zone-h.org, a security site-based in Estonia, has uncovered the elementary mistake in RIAA's robot.txt files which gave the crackers their back door. This is our first exposure to Estonian humour. And we like it. The Register is publishing zone-h's entertaining treatment by permission.

Fight with computer brings SWAT team
It turned out that the man was simply upset at his computer — which he had called a "bitch" he "wanted to kill," police said — and the gun was a plastic pellet gun, not the .45-caliber automatic handgun it was made to resemble.
"It was alarming and concerning and expensive for us, but the man's conduct didn't warrant any criminal charges," Deputy Police Chief Dave Hayes said.

Canadian Woman Makes Hockey History in Finland
Canadian Hayley Wickenheiser became the first woman to take to the open ice in a professional men's league Saturday, bagging an assist in Kirkkonummi Lightning's 7-3 win over Kettara.
The 24-year-old also committed an error with a sloppy back pass in a an otherwise sound performance in the Finnish second division.
"I tried to keep it simple... I think it went as well as it could in the conditions," Wickenheiser said after the huge media interest drew over 80 journalists and broadcasters from around the world to the game.

Pentagon seeks robots for $1 million arms race
The U.S. Defence Department says it is offering a $1 million (620,000 pound) cash prize to the winner of a planned robot vehicle race between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
The "Grand Challenge," scheduled to take place on February 28, 2004, is intended to spur development of technologies that could be used by the U.S. military.

Rock legend Pete Townshend has issued a public statement denying being a paedophile after his name was linked with a police Internet porn inquiry.
But The Who guitarist and song-writer did admit studying child pornography for research into a campaign against it. He told reporters on Saturday that he told police what he was doing.
