OLD Muslim cleric defends Coke


One of Egypt's most senior religious figures is reported to have condemned allegations that the logo of the soft drink Coca Cola could be offensive to Muslims. For several days the rumours have been circulating that if the Coca Cola logo is viewed in a mirror or upside down, it appears to read in Arabic: "No to Mohammed," "No to Mecca."

Oil giant sues Greenpeace


Oil giant Exxon Mobil is suing environmental group Greenpeace over a protest last year in Luxembourg, in which activists chained to petrol pumps brought business to a standstill, Greenpeace has said.

90-year-old woman gives burglar a good caning


James Sharp may be a little embarrassed to tell his cellmates how he ended up behind bars.

He tried to rip off an old lady, who beat him with her cane.

Sharp was captured last March after his would-be victim, a 90-year-old woman, clobbered him with her cane. The woman escaped to a neighbor's house and called police. Sharp was arrested the following day.

British sex tourists turn killing fields of Cambodia into paedophiles' playground


Svay Pak does not figure in any guidebook, but by late afternoon the squalid shanty town on the outskirts of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, is thronged with Western men. The tourists lounge on plastic chairs in the shade, drinking Angkor beer and surveying the scenery: young girls, barely 11 or 12, wearing low-cut tops and come-hither smiles.

Cambodians Jail Glam Rocker For Alleged Sex Offenses


Glam rocker Gary Glitter is in trouble with authorities again.

Gary GlitterThe London Daily Standard reports Glitter was in prison in Cambodia for four days over the Christmas holiday on suspicion of alleged sex offenses.

A spokesman for the Anti Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Department tells the paper Glitter -- whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd -- was deported after an agreement was reached between government officials in Cambodia and Britain.

The Vatican state has one of the highest crime rates in the world -- on paper anyway.


Statistics released on Wednesday showed that in 2002 there were 397 civil offences and 608 penal offences in the 108-acre city state surrounded by Rome.

Since only 455 people live in the Vatican, that would make the crime rate 87.2 percent of the population for civil offences and a whopping 133.6 percent of the population for penal crimes.

German is a sick place
Prostitute, 77, Mugged After Night Shift


A 77-year-old German prostitute was mugged after leaving a brothel at the end of her night shift and slightly injured, a police spokesman said Wednesday. The woman could be the oldest prostitute working in Germany, the spokesman in the western town of Bochum said. Prostitution is legal in most parts of the country.

Teen Cleared in DVD Piracy Case
Court says okay to DeCSS


In a legal setback for Hollywood, a Norwegian court Tuesday acquitted a teenager accused of violating computer- security laws with a program he wrote to unscramble the encryption on DVD movies.

Jon Lech Johansen developed the "DeCSS" program, which circumvents the Content Scrambling System on DVDs, when he was 15. He said he wanted to play movies he owned on a computer running the Linux operating system, which couldn't unscramble the DVDs.

Illegal music sites 'here to stay'


Illegal music download sites will never be eradicated, the president of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has admitted. Cary Sherman told BBC News Online that music would always be available for free somewhere on the net despite costly court battles to shut down illegal music sites.

Women accused of running booming marijuana growing business out of their basements


Investigators learned of their activities last summer when a bank teller called police to say that the women's cash deposits smelled like marijuana.

Drug agents who searched the homes found more than 500 marijuana plants, $110,000 in cash and psychedelic mushrooms. Investigators said as many as 4,000 plants were grown.
