Horse named Budweiser falls into hole
Some men'd do anything for a Bud on a hot day
The horse -- named Budweiser -- slipped hind-end first into the backyard tank's circular opening after breaking through a plywood covering and a layer of dirt. The animal had to be hoisted out with a strap hooked to a county skiploader. In between, the horse waited calmly with his head and front legs stuck out of the hole, munching on carrots, getting cooled off with a garden hose and being petted by firefighters and animal control officers.

Man has to come to US or go to Jail, Denied visa to do same
Man has to come to US or go to Jail, Denied visa to do same. Dmitry Sklyarov, the Russian programmer at the centre of the first Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) prosecution, has been denied a US visa in a move that jeopardises his requirement to testify in the forthcoming trial of his former employers, ElcomSoft. ElcomSoft's chief executive, Alexander Katalov, has likewise been denied a visa, Planet PDF reports, in a move that surely means the already delayed October 21 start of the trial will be put back still further.

4 Parcel Bombs Explode in Pakistan
Four small parcel bombs exploded within minutes of each other at police and government offices in the volatile port city of Karachi on Wednesday, injuring at least nine people, police said. A fifth bomb was sent to a police station but did not go off. At least one of the parcels had "From Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal," written on it, said Sindh province Home Secretary Mukhtar Ahmad Sheikh, a reference to the United Action Front, a coalition of anti-American religious parties that made unprecedented gains in last week's national elections. Sheikh said, however, that authorities had no reason to believe the group was actually behind the attacks.

Windows Messenger is new spam vector
The forces of evil have produced a devilish tool whereby spam can be sent to thousands of Windows users in minutes, in the guise of system alerts. This was brought to our attention by reader Mike MacNeill, who sent us a screenie of a Windows system alert offering him the university diploma of his dreams with "no required tests, classes, books or interviews," in the classic manner. Below is a smaller example:

High-Speed Locomotive Powered by Jet Engine
The maker of America's fastest train is shopping around a new product that could bring high-speed rail service to areas outside the Northeast. Bombardier Transportation says its new "JetTrain" locomotive, powered by a jet engine, can reach 150 mph without needing overhead electrical lines like those used by Amtrak's high-speed Acela Express. Bombardier led the consortium that built Acela Express, which operates in the Boston-New York-Washington corridor.
