MISSILE INTERCEPT TEST SUCCESSFUL
A modified Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missile target vehicle was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., at 10 p.m. EDT, and a prototype interceptor was launched 22 minutes later and 4,800 miles away from the Ronald Reagan Missile Site Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The intercept took place approximately six minutes after the interceptor was launched, at an altitude in excess of 140 miles above the earth, and during the midcourse phase of the target warhead's flight. This was the fifth successful intercept--and the fourth consecutive--in seven flight tests since October 1999 for the GMD program.

Van Sought in D.C. Sniper Case
A dragnet covered suburban Washington on Tuesday as authorities searched for a cream-colored van spotted moments after a woman was killed in a mall parking lot by a single bullet to the head. The shooting led to fears that the sniper terrorizing the area had killed a ninth person.

WTC design contest
Your proposals
Suppose you had the authority to decide what should be rebuilt on the World Trade Center site. What would you want to build and what would you want it to communicate?

Antique WW2 Condom/Contraceptive, c.1942
I am offering this item for sale on the strict understanding that it may be past its sell-by-date, and would respectfully suggest it is to be used for collecting purposes only. This is an original 1940s condom, completely unused in its original wrapper. I found it in the pocket of a WWII soldier's uniform which was dated 1942, though I guess it could be a couple of years later.

The Sniper:
A political criminal?
The man who is killing people in the Washington, D.C. area with his high-powered rifle is in the pathological family of the Unibomber and Timothy McVeigh. You must think of the United States as an organic body, a body politic, which is producing new forms of social pathologies. He is not killing his victims for fun, I don’t think, but because he believes he is being asked to do so by a force that is part of the organic body.

Saudi Airlines Says Guards Foil Hijack Attempt
Saudi Arabian Airlines said on Tuesday that guards foiled a hijack attempt by a Saudi gunman aboard one of its flights from Sudan with 204 passengers and crew on board, adding no one was injured.
But Egypt's Middle East New Agency (Mena) quoted Sudanese sources as saying three Saudi hijackers were involved and that there were apparently some passengers hurt.

Put your own words into the mouth of Bill Gates
In the big list of "people you're kind of obligated to make fun of," the second name belongs to one William Tiberius Gates the Third. He's a man of many facets, the largest two, of course, being the "greedy" facet and the "nerdy" facet.

2,000 bodies found underneath family home
The find was unearthed in the cellar of the property after plumbers came in to repair a pipe and discovered the skeletons under the floor. Specialists say the remains date back to the 1100-1350. One possibility is that they were moved from a cemetery in the 14th or 15th century to make way for a new cathedral.

Real snipers resent D.C. shooter
They look through a cylinder of glass and metal at a distant target, knowing they are about to snuff out a life. They don't brag about their kills over beer, nor do they overly brood about them. They take life only to save other lives. To them, the word "sniper" is a badge of honor and a hallmark of skill. And to them, whoever has been terrorizing the Washington area for the last two weeks is not worthy of the name.
