Lego tower measuring 11 stories claims Guinness record

Students and teachers celebrated Monday at Dickinson High School in Milltown, Dela., as their 11-story-tall Lego tower, which qualifies as the tallest in the world, topped its way into the Guinness World Record books.

The tower -- measuring at 112 feet and 11 and 3-quarter inches -- took months to construct and consists of about 500,000 bricks. In front of a large crowd Monday evening, a crane raised Superintendent Merv Daugherty to the peak and he placed a simple red schoolhouse (the school district's logo) at the top to finish off the toy tower that weighs nearly a ton.

10,000-Piece LEGO Mosaic Of Video Game Characters

This is a 75" x 45" LEGO mosaic made from 10,511-individual pieces that features a ton of oldschool NES and SEGA video game characters. Etsy seller Mytemporaryshop (awesome name) is currently selling the piece for $4,828.59 (strange price), with all proceeds going to help fund a friend's school project to send her class to Africa next year. Honestly, if I had $5,000 to blow I would consider it. Even more honestly, if I had $5,000 to blow I would also consider moving to Vegas. "Like, to live permanently?" Yep, UNTIL I DIE. I give myself four days, tops.

A Lego Set for Budding Architects, With No Instructions

Architecture Studio, a new set from Lego, comes with 1,210 white and translucent bricks. More notable is what it lacks: namely, instructions for any single thing you’re supposed to build with it. Instead, the kit is accompanied by a thick, 277-page guidebook filled with architectural concepts and building techniques alongside real world insights from prominent architecture studios from around the globe. In other words, this box o’ bricks is a little different. Where past Lego products might have had the happy ancillary effect of nurturing youngsters’ interest in architecture, here, that’s the entire point.

How To Build Your Own LEGO Turing Machine

In honor of Alan Turing’s hundredth birthday, Davy Landman, Jereon van den Bos, and Paul Klint built a Turning Machine out of LEGOs. And if you like, you can build one too.

You can buy the LEGOS on the web, and the three Dutch researchers have posted the machine’s software to GitHub, the popular code repository and software version control service.

“The beauty of the Turing Machine is that it is conceptually a very simple device,” Landman tells Wired.

Epic Mario: a Lego Kickstarter

What would you do with 780,000 Lego studs?

Zachary Pollock wants to combine them with another childhood classic. He’s started a Kickstarter project to build an enormous mosaic, recreating the entire level 1-1 of the original Super Mario Brothers video game.

This project has a couple goals. First and foremost, I want to inspire a new generation of Lego enthusiasts. I also want to show people what they have forgotten, that building with Lego can be done at any age. My second goal is to use this project to test the waters for a foundation I would like to start that will work with children doing healing art projects using Lego bricks. This project aims to push the limits of imagination about what you can do with Lego bricks and particularly to break down stereotypes people have about both Lego and video games only being toys. I want to show the world Lego and video games can be works of art as well. Last but certainly not least I, and I think many other people, really want to see the entire level 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. made from Lego because it is just FUN! Right now I think we all need a little more fun in our lives.</p>

The Large Hadron Collider has been recreated in Lego

Sasha Mehlhase, a post doc from the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen has spent approximately 81 hours of work end EURO 2,000 to build a model of CERN's Large Hadron Collider's Atlas detector...out of LEGO bricks. All in all 9,500 LEGO brics were used on the model which is made in a 1:50 scale. His idea is to use the model for alternative learning - fx on events such as the Culture Night in Copenhagen. Sasha Mehlhase is currently working on a manual for construction of his model, so it can be reproduced.

LEGO Technic Super-8 Movie Projector

A fully functional Super 8 Movie Projector I built with Kalle using Lego Technic. The only non-Lego parts are the lens, the reel spindles and the lamp.

The projector uses just two engines and is fully featured with automatic feeding, 24 fps, fast rewind and 120m reel capabilities. A decent LED flashlight makes it pretty amazingly bright.
