The skies may soon be full of drones – some run by law enforcement agencies, others run by intelligence agencies and still others delivering novels and cases of diapers from Amazon. But a new project by a well-known hacker Samy Kamkar may give control of those drones to anyone with $400 and an hour of free time.

Drone-Mounted Laser Weapons Are On the Way
DARPA is funding research into drone-mounted laser weapons. The project, called Endurance, is referred to in DARPA's 2014 budget request as being tasked with the development of 'technology for pod-mounted lasers to protect a variety of airborne platforms from emerging and legacy EO/IR guided surface-to-air missiles.' The budget explains that it will be the first application of DARPA's much-discussed Excalibur laser defense system, which developed lasers powerful enough to use as weapons.

Boeing Turning Old F-16s Into Unmanned Drones
Boeing has revealed that it has retrofitted retired fighter jets to turn them into drones. It said that one of the Lockheed Martin F-16s made a first flight with an empty cockpit last week. Two U.S. Air Force pilots controlled the plane from the ground as it flew from a Florida base to the Gulf of Mexico (video). Boeing suggested that the innovation could ultimately be used to help train pilots, providing an adversary they could practise firing on. The jet — which had previously sat mothballed at an Arizona site for 15 years — flew at an altitude of 40,000ft (12.2km) and a speed of Mach 1.47 (1,119mph/1,800km/h).

Die ZEIT ist im Besitz von Ordnern im Umfang 80 Gigabyte, die den im Bundestag vertretenen Parteien für den Untersuchungsausschuss zur Spionagedrohne Euro Hawk überlassen wurden. Viele der Dokumente wollen Philip Faigle, Carsten Luther, Yassin Musharbash, Karsten Polke-Majewski und Kai Biermann online stellen, eine erste Sammlung findet sich bereits bei documentcloud.org und kann dort kommentiert werden. An der Auswertung ist auch der Militärjournalist Thomas Wiegold beteiligt, der in seinem Bundeswehr-Blog hin und wieder über den Euro Hawk berichtet.

US Navy robot stealth fighter in first unmanned carrier landings
The last of the great barriers has fallen: an unmanned aircraft has successfully made autonomous arrested landings on the deck of an aircraft carrier. It's now plain that robots are not just as good as human pilots - they are as good as the best human pilots.

124 Bundeswehrdrohnen sind bereits abgestürzt, die meisten mit Spionagetechnik zur “Bewegtzielerkennung”
Wieder hat das Verteidigungsministerium zum Einsatz von Bundeswehr-Drohnen gelogen: Es sind mit 124 Geräten unterschiedlicher Typen weitaus mehr unbemannte Luftfahrzeuge abgestürzt als bislang zugegeben. Das geht aus der Antwort auf eine Kleine Anfrage der Linksfraktion hervor. Zur Zeit hat die Bundeswehr noch 871 Drohnen. Die Abstürze betreffen vor allem die kleine Spionagedrohne “LUNA” (“Luftgestützte Unbemannte Nahaufklärungs-Ausstattung”), die in Afghanistan und im Kosovo geflogen wird. Wenige Wochen nach dem Amtsantritt des Verteidigungsministers Thomas de Mazière gab dessen Staatsekretär Thomas Kossendey dem MdB Paul Schäfer noch bekannt, lediglich vier “LUNA” seien bislang abgestürzt. Auf eine Kleine Anfrage der MdBs Ulla Jelpke und Andrej Hunko erklärte die Bundesregierung vor einem Jahr, seit 2007 seien zwei “Heron”, acht “LUNA” und vier “KZO” als Totalverluste zu bezeichnen. Auf eine spätere Nachfrage von Hunko wurde eine weitere “LUNA” als abgestürzt verzeichnet.

Rätselhafter Absturz einer Drohne in Somalia
Das Gerät soll der US-Luftwaffe gehört haben. Fotos weisen aber darauf hin, dass es sich um eine Helikopter-Drohne aus Österreich handelt, die nie in die USA verkauft wurde
Eine in Somalia abgestürzte Drohne gibt mittlerweile immer mehr Rätsel auf. Das unbemannte Luftfahrzeug ging an der Küste südlich der Stadt Mogadischu nieder. Wie am Dienstag von einem Sprecher der US-Armee bestätigt, handele es sich um einen Flugroboter der Vereinigten Staaten. Jedoch wollte der Militärangehörige gegenüber den Medien anonym bleiben. Nähere Angaben zur Ursache des Crashs machte er nicht, der Vorfall würde aber untersucht. Somit bleibt auch offen, ob die Drohne bewaffnet war oder welche sonstige Ausrüstung sie getragen hat. Die britische BBC will sogar vom somalischen Provinzgouverneur erfahren haben, dass die Drohne abgeschossen wurde.

Future Drones Will Autonomously Navigate the Skies Without GPS
Military drones rely heavily on GPS for navigation guidance while in the air. But in areas where a signal can't be found, or where someone is using a GPS jammer, a drone will find itself in a troublesome predicament. Military sub-contractor BAE Systems has come up with a solution to that problem: A positioning system called NAVSOP that uses any wireless signal to find its location.

Drone makers urge U.S. to let them sell more overseas
Despite concerns about U.S.-made drones ending up in enemy hands, American military contractors are lobbying the government to loosen export restrictions and open up foreign markets to the unmanned aircraft that have reshaped modern warfare.
Companies such as Northrop Grumman Corp.and other arms makers are eager to tap a growing foreign appetite for high-tech — and relatively cheap — drones, already being sold on the world market by countries such as Israel and China.

Einsatz 1000 Dollar: US-Spionage-Drohne entführt
“It was funny.” Feindliche Übernahme durch erfolgreichen GPS-Hack – Warnung vor “Terroristen”
Studenten der University of Texas haben die Kontrolle über ein kleines Drohnenflugzeug des US-Heimatschutzministeriums übernommen und vor den Augen der Beamten im Stadion der Universität den Kurs nach ihren Vorgaben geändert.
Die Drohne drehte sich nach dem Start, der von den DHS-Beamten durchgeführt wurde, entgegen der ursprünglich eingegebenen Daten für die Route zur Seite und raste Richtung Erdboden. Kurz vor dem Aufprall zogen die Studenten das kleine Flugzeug wieder in die Höhe, da es nicht darum ging, das Fluggerät zu zerstören.

Spy drones can be hijacked by terrorists, used as weapons
Most Americans can conjure up images of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, when terrorists hijacked jetliners and used them as guided, fuel-laden missiles to cause the most casualties.
Now, imagine those scenarios being played out on a smaller, but more frequent, scale, all across the country. It's possible, if a change in U.S. policy regarding domestic airspace goes through.

The Drone Doctrine In Yemen – Analysis
The American policy of employing Unarmed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), more commonly known as drones, is eliciting mixed responses from various international actors. Human rights groups such as Amnesty International are amongst the most vocal critics of the policy, publically raising questions both over the legality and the non-discretionary use of drones in the Middle East. Individual governments have criticized the violation of sovereignty that comes from drone use. Pakistan’s foreign ministry noted that “[drone] attacks are in total contravention of international law and established norms of interstate relations.” The policy however remains popular with the U.S. government, which allows drones to gather intelligence on and eliminate dangerous terrorist leaders, while not having to commit soldiers to combat. The two regions where America prominently employs drones are Afghanistan-Pakistan (AfPak) and Yemen, the latter of which shall be discussed in depth. American drones in Yemen primarily target Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) militants, and are managed and controlled by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). While American drone use in Yemen dates back to 2000, the present intensity and frequency of drone operations in Yemen since March 2012, is unprecedented.
