Gorgeous and Intriguing Photos Of Pre-Cold War Vienna 1959-1960
“In 1959 I had just turned 18. I had my first ‘proper’ camera,” writes Libby Hall. “A rangefinder made by, I think, Agfa. I knew almost nothing about photography, except that I was passionate about doing it. “I spent the next four years in Vienna and Geneva, returning to New York for six months in 1960 to work filing negatives in the fabulous new Life magazine photo lab.. I gradually learned more about photography, and began to get cameras with better lenses.”

Österreichs Innenminister will „in allen Fragen eine lückenlose Überwachung“

"Wer?" "DER STEINSCHEISSER-KOARL!!!"

The 28-Year-Old Activist Who Took on Facebook. And Won
A new U.S.-European Union data-privacy accord that took hold this week could have been a reason to celebrate for Max Schrems, the 28-year-old whose successful landmark lawsuit against Facebook last year led to the new rules affecting more than 4,000 companies. Instead, he's saying the new rules should be thrown out as well. Schrems says the new framework is muddled, allowing mass amounts of data collected by American technology companies to continue making its way to U.S. national security agencies. He expects the new policy to be struck down again by courts, leaving global companies further in limbo. “Privacy Shield is the product of pressure by the U.S. and the IT industry – not of rational or reasonable considerations," Schrems said in a statement after the rules, which began Aug. 1, were passed by European lawmakers last month. "It is very likely to fail again."

Strange, Seductive and Surreal Erotica from 1920-30’s Vienna
Atelier Manassé was a highly successful photographic studio established by husband and wife team Adorján von Wlássics (1893 - 1946) and Olga Solarics (1896 - 1969) in Austria in 1924—though some sources cite 1922. Principally based in Vienna—with a smaller office in Berlin—the studio flourished during the 1920s and 1930s. It was known for producing highly flattering portrait photography of film, theater and cabaret stars. It could be said Adorján and Olga were the airbrush pioneers of their day—artfully painting out any blemishes or wrinkles and reducing the unsightly flab from legs and waists. The resulting photographs were mass produced and sold to fans as much sought after postcards.

Austrian Mint sells 41 tonnes of gold coins and gold bars in 2015
Earlier this year, the director of marketing and sales at the Austrian Mint confirmed to Bloomberg in an interview that the Mint’s combined gold bar and gold coin sales in 2015 had totalled 1.32 million troy ounces, a 45% increase on 2014, while the Mint’s silver sales in 2015 had reached 7.3 million ounces, a figure 58% higher than in 2014. Since Münze Österreich, or the Austrian Mint in English, only publishes its annual report in July of each year, we had to wait a few months to see the granular details behind these sales numbers. Now that the Austrian Mint’s 2015 Annual Report has been published, the detailed sales figures are as follows.

FBI's Mass Hack Hit 50 Computers in Austria
In early 2015, the FBI embarked on a massive hacking campaign, delivering malware to thousands of criminal suspects who visited a dark web child porn site. The operation was known to affect over a thousand computers in the US, and to reach as far afield as Chile and Greece. Now, it has emerged that the FBI also compromised 50 computers based in Austria, with activists warning of the FBI’s expanding extraterritorial reach when it comes to hacking. The FBI’s “Operation Pacifier” campaign centred around a dark web site called Playpen. The FBI briefly took over the site, and sent a network investigative technique (NIT)—the agency's general term for a piece of malware—to visitors of certain child pornography-related threads. That malware grabbed suspects’ IP addresses, MAC addresses, and other technical information.

Kreisel Brothers – Austrian Entrepreneurs
We keep hoping for the long-awaited 10X, or even 5X battery that would make electric aviation “pop” in a significant way. The Kreisel brothers in Austria are not developing new batteries or chemistries, but through careful design and manufacturing techniques, manage to reduce weight in their battery packages – one example being the two “ultra-lightweight battery units” they supply for PC-Aero’s Elektra One. With a total weight of “just 64 kilograms,” (140.8 pounds), the packs “provide [an] efficient and reliable energy supply for a range of 400 kilometers (248 miles)… a flight duration of three hours [and a] speed of 160 kilometers per hour (99.2 mph).”
