Eines der Hauptergebnisse des aktuellen UN-Drogenberichts: Die Produktion von Rohopium, aus dem etwa Heroin gewonnen wird, ist in den letzten zehn Jahren massiv angestiegen: Waren es 1998 nach Schätzungen der UNO noch 4.346 Tonnen, betrug die weltweite Gesamtproduktion 2007 schon 8.870 Tonnen.

But James Wong, a 27-year-old ethnobotanist (a scientist who studies how people use plants), wants to change our minds. Die Zahl der Haschisch- und Kokain-Konsumenten steigt seit einigen Jahren deutlich an
Veränderungen gibt es auf dem Markt selbst, was sich auch bei Untersuchungen wie dem jährlich erscheinenden Drogenbericht des Gesundheitsministeriums spiegelt. Dessen jüngste Ausgabe wurde im Oktober 2008 vorgestellt und zeigt Auffälligkeiten bei Haschisch und Kokain. Auf die Frage, ob sie jemals in ihrem Leben einen Joint geraucht haben, antworteten im Jahr 1993 fünf Prozent der Wiener mit "ja". Im Jahr 2007 waren es fast viermal so viele: 19 Prozent stimmten zu.

Happy 30th Birthday, Compact Disc!
Compact discs weren't always impromptu drink coasters. Once, in the not-so-distant past, they played music, contained pictures, and let people play video games with tacked-on FMV sequences. And today, the venerable CD turned 30.
Happy birthday! 1979-2009.Thirty years. Pretty amazing that it's been that long since those crazy Dutchmen at Philips spun the technology off of laser discs as part of an optical digital audio disc demo in Eindhoven.

John Cleese soll meine Grabrede halten
Was mir als Studivz-Gruppe einer befremdeten-österreichischen-Freundin ins Auge stieß erweckte an einem dieser Tage voller Eintönigkeit mein Interesse. Ein allseits bekannter Schauspieler der wohl berühmtesten Comedy Crew ever (die Rede ist hier natürlich von Monty Python (’Flying Circus’, ‘Fawlty Towers’ (lief damals in den guten alten Zeiten Samstag Abends stets nach der Wochenshow (als das Fernsehen noch nicht derart verseucht schien)) und selbstverständlich ‘Ritter der Kokusnuss’) war es Wert diese lange Recherche zu begehen und finally einen der größten Schätze britischen Humors auszugraben.
