One U.S. Corporation's Role in Egypt's Brutal Crackdown
The open Internet's role in popular uprising is now undisputed. Look no further than Egypt, where the Mubarak regime today reportedly shut down Internet and cell phone communications -- a troubling predictor of the fierce crackdown that has followed.
What's even more troubling is news that one American company is aiding Egypt's harsh response through sales of technology that makes this repression possible.
The Internet's favorite offspring -- Twitter, Facebook and YouTube -- are now heralded on CNN, BBC and Fox News as flag-bearers for a new era of citizen journalism and activism. (More and more these same news organizations have abandoned their own, more traditional means of newsgathering to troll social media for breaking information.)

SourceForge schaltet Server nach Einbruch ab
Der Open-Source-Hoster SourceForge.net hat mit einem Einbruch zu kämpfen: Seit Mittwoch wurden einige Dienste zur Quellenverwaltung abgeschaltet, darunter auch der für die Projekte wichtige CVS-Server. Sourceforge.net hostet über 250.000 Open-Source-Projekte, darunter so bekannte Programme wie der Audio-Editor Audacity, die Textverarbeitung Abiword, der Videoplayer VLC und der Komprimierer 7-zip.

The future of H2G2 - Latest official news
I'm Social Media Executive for BBC Online and I have responsibility for H2G2.
By now some of you may have read the announcements about the review of BBC Online, so I wanted to tell you as soon as I could about how this will affect H2G2.
If you haven't seen the announcements, the big news is that BBC Online is having to cut its budget by 25% and is being reorganised. Part of this reorganisation will see the BBC moving away from stand alone communities and message boards. Last year some message boards were closed, more will close this year. The BBC's other big community 606 is scheduled for closure. (You can read about why we're moving in this direction on this blog post from Ian Hunter: www.bbc.co.uk )

Produzent Bernd Eichinger gestorben
Er hat den deutschen Film geprägt, stand hinter Erfolgen wie "Der Name der Rose", "Das Parfum" oder "Der Untergang". Jetzt ist Bernd Eichinger überraschend gestorben. Der Produzent erlag in Los Angeles einem Herzinfarkt. Er wurde 61 Jahre alt.

Abmahnanwalt scheitert mit Klage gegen Heise
Der Karlsruher Rechtsanwalt Peter Nümann ist mit dem Versuch gescheitert, dem Heise Zeitschriften Verlag Teile der Berichterstattung über das Geschäftsgebaren von Massenabmahnern verbieten zu lassen. Nümann, der selbst als Massenabmahner im Urheberrechtsbereich gilt, sah durch Passagen eines c't-Artikels seinen Ruf und seine Ehre verletzt. Dieser Ansicht widersprach das Oberlandesgericht Köln nun in einem Berufungsurteil deutlich.

Türkei: Lehrer darf nicht über Evolution sprechen
Ob der Mensch vom Affen abstammt, wollte ein Fünftklässler in Ankara von seinem Lehrer wissen. Der erklärte daraufhin die Evolutionstheorie - und handelte sich damit eine Verwarnung von der Schulbehörde ein. Die Lehrergewerkschaft will den Fall vor Gericht bringen.
Was nicht auf dem Lehrplan steht, darüber darf im Unterricht nicht gesprochen werden. Nach dieser Logik hat die türkische Schulbehörde nun einen Grundschullehrer in der Hauptstadt Ankara verwarnt. Er hatte den Schülern einer fünften Klasse die Evolutionstheorie von Charles Darwin erläutert. Daraufhin hatte sich die Mutter eines Jungen beschwert, was zu der Verwarnung führte.
