Strong Swiss franc hits chocolate industry
Consumption of chocolate in Switzerland dropped slightly last year and sales abroad declined as a result of the strong Swiss franc and downbeat consumer confidence.
A total of 176,332 tons of chocolate products – worth SFr1.7 billion ($1.9 billion) - was sold in 2011, according to the industry association, Chocosuisse.

«Raus aus der warmen Stube und rein in die warme Stube auf Rädern.» So oder ähnlich könnte das Motto von Pascal Prokop heissen. Der junge Mann hat einen Ofen in seinen Volvo 240 eingebaut. «Wenn ich müde bin oder zu viel getrunken habe, will ich im Auto schlafen», erklärt der Rangierlokführer aus Mettmenstetten in der Rundschau, weshalb er auf die Idee mit dem Ofen in seinem Auto mit Jahrgang 1990 kam. Nun müsse er gar die Scheibe etwas herunterkurbeln, damit ihm nicht zu warm sei. Anfangs fiel er mit seiner Konstruktion noch mehr auf: «Der Kamin ragte zunächst zwei Meter in die Höhe. Das sah gut aus, aber ich kam nie weit.»

Europe is being hit by severe cold weather that started two weeks ago, and the Continent’s deep freeze expected to continue until mid-February.

France’s Health Minister Urges Homeless to Stay Indoors this Winter
Junior minister Nora Berra was ridiculed on the internet for writing a blog at the weekend saying toddlers, old people, the sick and homeless were particularly vulnerable in times of extreme cold and should “avoid going outdoors”.
Her note sparked a flurry of Twitter messages and media reports that she was suggesting the homeless not leave home.

Eine kürzlich veröffentlichte Sicherung der Pirate Bay ist entsprechend gerade Mal 90 Megabyte groß (unkomprimiert 164 MB). Sollte es Ermittlern also tatsächlich gelingen, die Server des Portals abzuschalten, könnten innerhalb weniger Stunden alternative Mirrors entstehen. Ein Abbild der Webseite Bitsnoop ist seit Kurzem ebenfalls in Umlauf. 17 Millionen Torrents wurden hier auf vergleichsweise kleine 525 Megabyte zusammengeschrumpft. Öffentliche Grabbing- und Komprimierungsscripts machen es weiter möglich, dass jeder User sein eigenes Backup anfertigt.

Iran to unveil 'great nuclear achievements'
Iran's President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, says "great" nuclear achievements will be announced in the next few days.
He did not give any details, but insisted that Iran would never halt its programme to enrich uranium, which can be used to make a nuclear warhead.

Rupert Murdoch Pledges Commitment To Sun After Five More Arrests
Rupert Murdoch has reassured staff of his "total commitment" to continue to own and publish The Sun after five members of staff were arrested today, it has emerged.
The men were among eight people arrested today in connection with the probe into inappropriate payments to police and public officials, which also included a serving member of the Armed Forces, a Ministry of Defence employee and a serving officer at Surrey Police.

INTERPOL, the international policing organization, is building a law enforcement tech geek heaven in Singapore. The INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation will function as a R&D lab, training facility, and forensics lab for all things cybercrime. Slated to open in 2014, the Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI) will be part of the larger INTERPOL Singapore Center. Staff at the IGCI are expected to work on everything from combating child porn to creating low-cost cybercrime research databases for poorer nations.

Anti-ACTA-Demo in Berlin
Ich komme grade von der Anti-ACTA-Demo in Berlin, Bilder hab’ ich grade bei Flickr hochgeladen. Die Polizei spricht von 2000 Teilnehmern, die Veranstalter von 10.000, also sind 5000 eine realistische Einschätzung. Für einen Protest gegen ein Handelsabkommen zum geistigen Eigentum ist das Wahnsinn. In München sollen nach Polizeiangaben 16.000 Leute auf der Straße gewesen sein, in Köln 2000. Und die haben sich alle für Copyright-Schnickschnack den Arsch abgefroren! Woah!

Ad acta war gestern - Urheberrecht im Internet
Politiker werden Getriebene einer neuen Zeit: Das Internet macht selbst Handelsabkommen zu Aufregerthemen. Am Freitag verschob auch das Auswärtige Amt die Unterschrift unter das Abkommen gegen Produktpiraterie. Was wird jetzt aus dem Urheberrecht?
Alles ist heimlich, still und leise geschehen, die Öffentlichkeit hat keine Notiz davon genommen. Vielleicht war das gar nicht die Absicht; gewiss geht auch alles seinen juristisch gebotenen Gang. Das Europaparlament muss ja erst noch abstimmen. Danach müssen die Länderparlamente ratifizieren: Aber wer schaut schon darauf, was da gerade debattiert wird?
So geschah es am Rande einer Landwirtschaftskonferenz im Januar, dass 22 EU-Mitgliedstaaten das „Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement“ unterzeichnet haben. Die Vereinbarung trägt das Kürzel Acta, es ist ein Handelsabkommen, dessen ursprüngliches Ziel es war, den Handel mit gefälschter Markenware einzudämmen. Aber in der heutigen Zeit geht es in dieser Hinsicht gleich auch um das Kopieren von urheberrechtlich geschütztem, geistigem Eigentum im Internet. Und deshalb haben die Politiker einen riesigen Fehler gemacht. Denn heimlich, still und leise funktioniert bei diesem Thema nicht mehr, auch wenn man nur „Business as usual“ im Kopf gehabt hat: Zu viele Menschen interessiert die Zukunft des Internet mehr als das wirtschaftliche Schicksal von Griechenland.
