Stanley Kubrick’s Film Career on Display in San Francisco
Stanley Kubrick had exacting standards as a film director—and it shows in his output on the silver screen. Whether you’re watching Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, or A Clockwork Orange, it’s as much about the camera angles and set designs as it is about the expressions on actors’ faces and the way they deliver their lines. Each film is like a giant jigsaw puzzle—each piece neatly fitting into place, each used to build the finished product. Many of these pieces (and more) make up Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition, a traveling museum exhibit that has landed at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. The exhibit covers the length of Kubrick’s career, from his beginnings as a magazine photographer in the 1940s to his early directing days in the ’50s and ’60s, all the way up to his swan song, Eyes Wide Shut. To schedule a visit to the museum, click here. The exhibit runs until Oct. 30, 2016. Take a look at some behind-the-scenes photographs of Kubrick on the set of his various films—as well as some shots of the exhibit itself.

Revolutionary Camera Recording Propulsion Data Completes Groundbreaking Test
While thousands turned out watch NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) recently complete a full-scale test of its booster, few were aware of the other major test occurring simultaneously. NASA’s High Dynamic Range Stereo X (HiDyRS-X) project, a revolutionary high-speed, high dynamic range camera, filmed the test, recording propulsion video data in never before seen detail. The HiDyRS-X project originated from a problem that exists when trying to film rocket motor tests. Rocket motor plumes, in addition to being extremely loud, are also extremely bright, making them difficult to record without drastically cutting down the exposure settings on the camera. Doing so, however, darkens the rest of the image, obscuring other important components on the motor. Traditionally, video cameras record using one exposure at a time, but HiDyRS-X records multiple, slow motion video exposures at once, combining them into a high dynamic range video that perfectly exposes all areas of the video image.

Privacy warriors drag GCHQ into Euro human rights court over blanket spying, hacking
Having failed in its bid to block GCHQ's hacking activities at the UK's Investigatory Powers Tribunal, advocacy group Privacy International says it will now take its fight with the UK government to the European Court of Human Rights. Joined by five other groups from around the globe, Privacy International says it will be arguing that the government's hacking of computers and communications devices as well as its collection of personal data constitute violations of human rights law.

The Internet of Dildos Is Watching You
As increasingly banal devices come online as the latest additions to the internet of things, it was inevitable that sex toys would get added into the mix. Known as teledildonics, the realm of internet connected sex toys has been heralded as the future of sex for years now, and as with all internet connected devices, these toys are liable to get hacked. The legal and ethical risks posed by the internet of dildos was the subject of a presentation by two hackers from New Zealand at DEF CON on Friday, but they were less concerned with third party dildo exploits than the manufacturer settings that come built into the devices.

Surveillance video shows a case of high-tech grand theft auto, more than 100 cars stolen
And this is how they reportedly do it: Investigators say they hook up a laptop to the Jeep, with pirated software, simply turn on the SUV, and drive it off. In many cases, the Jeeps are unlocked, so they don't have to break in. Police finally found Arce and Zelaya, because back in April a person who had his Jeep stolen had surveillance video of the crime as it took place. That helped police big-time.

(Ab)Using the HTML5 Battery Status API for Advertising
The Device and Sensor Working Group is tasked with creating client-side APIs that interact with device hardware, sensors, services and applications such as the camera, microphone, proximity sensors, native address books, calendars and the Battery Status API. The Battery Status API provides information about the system's battery charge level and lets you be notified by events that are sent when the battery level or charging status change. This can be used to adjust your app's resource usage to reduce battery drain when the battery is low, or to save changes before the battery runs out in order to prevent data loss.

The Perseid meteor shower should be great this year
Every year, the Earth moves through the debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet, resulting in the Perseid meteor shower. This year, the Earth is predicted to move through a particularly dense part of the comet's wake, which may mean twice the number of shooting stars during this year's shower.
The best way to see the Perseids is to go outside between midnight and dawn on the morning of Aug. 12. Allow about 45 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark. Lie on your back and look straight up. Increased activity may also be seen on Aug. 12-13.

Nigerian Scammers Infect Themselves With Own Malware, Revealing New Wire-Wire Fraud Scheme
A pair of security researchers recently uncovered a Nigerian scammer ring that they say operates a new kind of attack called “wire-wire” after a few of its members accidentally infected themselves with their own malware. Over the past several months, they’ve watched from a virtual front row seat as members used this technique to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from small and medium-sized businesses worldwide. “We've gotten unprecedented insight into the very nitty-gritty mechanics of their entire operation,” says James Bettke, a researcher at SecureWorks, a subsidiary of Dell Inc. focused on cybersecurity. Bettke and Joe Stewart, who directs malware research for SecureWorks, are presenting the details of their findings this week at the annual Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas.

Hackers Could Break Into Your Monitor To Spy on You and Manipulate Your Pixels
We think of our monitors as passive entities. The computer sends them data, and they somehow—magically?—turn it into pixels which make words and pictures. But what if that wasn’t the case? What if hackers could hijack our monitors and turn them against us? As it turns out, that’s possible. A group of researchers has found a way to hack directly into the tiny computer that controls your monitor without getting into your actual computer, and both see the pixels displayed on the monitor—effectively spying on you—and also manipulate the pixels to display different images.
