Ältester Kochtopf der Welt entdeckt
Archäologen haben in der chinesischen Provinz Jiangxi die bisher ältesten Keramiken der Welt ausgegraben. Sie wurden bei Ausgrabungen in einer Höhle entdeckt und sind rund 20.000 Jahre alt. Damit sei nun endgültig sicher, dass die Töpferei nicht - wie lange Zeit angenommen - erst mit Beginn der Landwirtschaft vor etwa 10.000 Jahren aufgekommen sei, berichtet ein internationales Forscherteam im Fachblatt „Science“.

Bee stings killed as many in UK as terrorists, says watchdog
Bee stings kill as many people in Britain as terrorist attacks do, according to a report by a Government watchdog who claims the risk from extremists has fallen “markedly” in recent years.
David Anderson said that no one has even been injured by an Islamist in this country for more than two years, while the number of convictions has dropped to a “handful”.
As a result he suggested that ministers could relax some anti-terror laws without endangering public safety, such as by allowing terror suspects to apply for bail or making it harder to ban certain groups.
Mr Anderson, a barrister who serves as the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation, also congratulated the Coalition for scrapping tough stop and search powers and halving the maximum detention time for suspects to 14 days.

Haftstrafe für Gehard Gribkowsky: Das Landgericht München verurteilte den Ex-BayernLB-Manager im Schmiergeldprozess um den Verkauf der Formel-1-Anteile zu achteinhalb Jahren Gefängnis. Der frühere BayernLB-Vorstand Gerhard Gribkowsky muss für achteinhalb Jahre ins Gefängnis. Das Landgericht München verurteilte den Banker wegen Bestechlichkeit, Untreue und Steuerhinterziehung. Gribkowsky hatte vor einer Woche gestanden, 44 Mio. Dollar Schmiergeld von Formel-1-Chef Bernie Ecclestone erhalten und nicht versteuert zu haben. Die Staatsanwaltschaft hatte sogar zehn Jahre und sechs Monate Haft gefordert.

Durchbruch in der Syrien-Diplomatie
Ein Treffen der Vetomächte in Genf am Samstag dürfte die Wende im Syrien-Konflikt bringen. Russland gibt seine Unterstützung für Assad nach FTD-Informationen auf. Der syrische Präsident kann auf Straffreiheit hoffen, wenn er den Weg für einen Übergang frei macht.
Die diplomatische Auseinandersetzung um Syrien steht vor einer Wende. Bei einem Treffen der fünf ständigen Mitglieder des Uno-Sicherheitsrats in Genf könnte Russland am Samstag seine Unterstützung für den syrischen Machthaber Baschar al-Assad aufgeben und - wie die westlichen Staaten im Sicherheitsrat und die Arabische Liga - den Rücktritt des Präsidenten als Voraussetzungen für einen politischen Neuanfang fordern. "Wenn wir uns auf der Grundlage dieses Fahrplans treffen können", sagte US-Außenministerin Hillary Clinton bei einem Besuch in Helsinki, "dann wäre dies ein sehr sinnvolles Treffen." Voraussetzung für die Genfer Konferenz war offensichtlich, dass alle Teilnehmer zuvor dem Übergangsplan von Annan zustimmen. Wie die FTD aus europäischen diplomatischen Kreisen erfuhr, soll Russland für sein Einlenken Garantien erhalten, dass seine Interessen in der Region gewahrt bleiben.

Bund erlaubt umstrittene CO2-Speicherung
ach langem Streit haben sich Bundestag und Bundestag auf die unterirdische Speicherung von Kohlendioxid geeinigt. Laut dem Kompromiss soll deutlich weniger verpresstes Gas gespeichert werden als geplant. Greenpeace kritisierte den Deal scharf.
Nach monatelangen Verhandlungen gibt es eine Einigung über die unterirdische Speicherung von klimaschädlichem Kohlendioxid in Deutschland. Der Vermittlungsausschuss von Bundestag und Bundesrat beschloss am Mittwochabend einen Kompromiss. Demnach soll die verpresste CO2-Menge auf 1,3 Millionen pro Jahr und Speicher begrenzt werden - zunächst waren drei Millionen Tonnen geplant.

Police: Teaneck man, 72, pointed gun at neighbor over flatulence
A 72-year-old man is accused of threatening his neighbor with a gun for farting outside his apartment, police said.
Daniel Collins Jr. is accused of pointing a silver revolver at his 47-year-old neighbor in the vestibule of their Cedar Lane apartment building and saying, “I’m going to put a hole in your head.” The confrontation occurred after Collins said his neighbor farted as he walked in front of Collins’ apartment, said Detective Lt. Andrew McGurr.

The Drone Doctrine In Yemen – Analysis
The American policy of employing Unarmed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), more commonly known as drones, is eliciting mixed responses from various international actors. Human rights groups such as Amnesty International are amongst the most vocal critics of the policy, publically raising questions both over the legality and the non-discretionary use of drones in the Middle East. Individual governments have criticized the violation of sovereignty that comes from drone use. Pakistan’s foreign ministry noted that “[drone] attacks are in total contravention of international law and established norms of interstate relations.” The policy however remains popular with the U.S. government, which allows drones to gather intelligence on and eliminate dangerous terrorist leaders, while not having to commit soldiers to combat. The two regions where America prominently employs drones are Afghanistan-Pakistan (AfPak) and Yemen, the latter of which shall be discussed in depth. American drones in Yemen primarily target Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) militants, and are managed and controlled by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). While American drone use in Yemen dates back to 2000, the present intensity and frequency of drone operations in Yemen since March 2012, is unprecedented.
