Parliament to launch in-depth inquiry into US surveillance programmes
Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee will conduct an "in-depth inquiry" into the US surveillance programmes, including the bugging of EU premises and other spying allegations, and present its results by the end of this year, says a resolution passed by the full House on Thursday. Parliament's President and political group leaders formally confirmed the launch of the inquiry. MEPs also call for more protection for whistleblowers.
In the resolution, approved by 483 votes to 98 with 65 abstentions, MEPs express serious concern over PRISM and other surveillance programmes, strongly condemn spying on EU representations and call on the US authorities to provide them with full information on these allegations without further delay.

Warum fürchten wir uns Deutschen so davor, dass jemand anderes weiß, wer mit wem telefoniert hat? Vermutlich liegen die Gründe in unserer Vergangenheit. Deshalb muss nun alles anders werden: Die ersten träumen nach der Atomwende bereits von der Datenwende.
Okay, ich bin vielleicht derzeit nicht in der glücklichsten Position, um den NSA-Abhörskandal zu kommentieren. Vor zehn Tage bin ich mit meinem Sohn in die USA gereist, in ein Ferienhaus an der Ostküste. "Finde als Patriot: Amerika geht nicht mehr", schrieb mir am Montag ein Kollege per SMS. Ich kann zu meiner Entschuldigung nur sagen, dass bei Reiseantritt das Ausmaß des Skandals noch nicht absehbar war.

Android-Anwendungen sind mit einer Signatur versehen, die die Integrität des APK-Pakets gewährleisten soll. Bei der Installation prüft das Betriebssystem seinen Inhalt anhand der Signatur und warnt, wenn es eine Manipulation feststellt. Das erst Mitte 2012 gegründete US-Unternehmen Bluebox will nun einen Fehler in diesem Verfahren entdeckt haben, der das Einschleusen beliebigen Codes in APK-Dateien ermöglicht, ohne die Signatur zu brechen. Laut Bluebox sind Apps in Googles Android-Shop "Play" von der Sicherheitslücke nicht betroffen.

Straßburg - Das EU-Parlament hat die mutmaßlichen Spionageaktionen des US-Geheimdienstes NSA gegen EU-Vertretungen scharf verurteilt. Die Abgeordneten verlangen einen Stopp sämtlicher Überwachungsprogramme. Die USA sollten den Europäern alle Informationen über das Überwachungsprogramm Prism ohne Umschweife zur Verfügung stellen, heißt es in einer Resolution. Diese wurde am Donnerstag in Straßburg mit großer Mehrheit angenommen.

As Egypt's military ousted President Mohammed Morsi on Wednesday, non-Egyptians were able to read his tweets in their local languages.
Other figures being translated included opposition leader Mohammed ElBaradei and Arab Spring activist Wael Ghonim.

Doug Engelbart, Who Foresaw the Modern Computer, Dies at 88
Douglas Engelbart — the father of the computer mouse and so many of the other basic concepts that drive our personal machines and the modern internet — has died at the age of 88.
According to an email from his daughter, posted to a mailing list dedicated to classic computers, Engelbart died “peacefully” in his sleep at his home in Atherton, California.

The UK Government bans khat, ignores advice of its own experts
The UK government has today announced it will go against the recommendations of its own drugs experts (again) and ban khat, a plant mostly used by the UK’s Somali and Yemeni communities, that produces a mild stimulant effect when chewed.
Earlier this year, the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, the body responsible for providing the government with expert advice on drugs, produced a detailed review of the evidence (PDF) on the social and health harms of khat and offered recommendations on responses to the drug in the UK.

Credit card donations to WikiLeaks flowing through Iceland again
International credit card donations to WikiLeaks are flowing again after an Icelandic court ruling forced MasterCard's and Visa's local agent to process payments, the companies involved in processing the funds said.
One of WikiLeaks' most important sources of funding - donations made from Visa and MasterCard users around the globe - was cut off in 2010 when the firms stopped processing donations to WikiLeaks' direct payment line in Iceland.

EU Oversight of Security and Spy Agencies
Abstract
This study evaluates the oversight of national security and intelligence agencies by parliaments and specialised non-parliame ntary oversight bodies, with a view to identifying good practices that can inform the European Parliament’s approach to strengthening the oversight of Europol, Eurojust, Frontex and, to a lesser extent, Sitcen. The study puts forward a series of detailed recommendations (including in the field of access to classified information) that are formulated on the basis of in-depth assessments of: (1) the current functions and powers of these four bodies; (2) existing arrangements for the oversight of these bodies by the European Parliament, the Joint Supervisory Bodies and national parliaments; and (3) the legal and institutional frameworks for parliamentary and specialised oversight of security and intelligence agencies in EU Member States and other major democracies.
