Island of debris the size of TEXAS from 2011 Japanese tsunami is headed straight for the U.S.
A floating island of debris the size of Texas has been crossing the vast Pacific Ocean to the western shores of the Americas since a devastating tsunami inundated Japan in 2011, says a new study.
Five million tons of wreckage - the remains of homes, boats, and other remnants of shattered lives in eastern Japan - were swallowed by the ocean that day in March, and more than one million tons of flotsam continues to head towards the west coast of the US.
While the first documented debris from the tragedy has already been found in California, scientists fear these new findings mean there could be a lot more to come and it might arrive all at once.

Drugs legislation is hampering clinical research, warns David Nutt
The UK's drug laws are preventing scientists from carrying out vital research to unlock our understanding of the brain and find new treatments for conditions such as depression and Parkinson's disease, according to Professor David Nutt, a leading neuroscientist and former government drug adviser.
"Things are actually getting worse," said Nutt, referring to the restrictions placed on research. "It's the dark ages beginning to descend in this field. [The UK] led the world in discovering the constituents of cannabis – about 100 individual substances, all of which can have therapeutic value – and we've exploited virtually none of it because it's too difficult."

Drogenbericht: Cannabis-Konsum leicht zurückgegangen
In Deutschland sind neuartige synthetische Drogen zwar relativ wenig verbreitet, doch Experten warnen vor den Risiken unbekannter Chemikalien-Mischungen. Laut dem Jahresbericht der Beobachtungsstelle für Drogen ist außerdem der Cannabis-Konsum leicht rückläufig.
Berlin/München - Cannabis bleibt zwar die am häufigsten konsumierte illegale Droge in Deutschland, doch der Konsum ist leicht rückläufig. Wie die deutsche Beobachtungsstelle für Drogen und Drogensucht (DBDD) in ihrem Jahresbericht mitteilt, gaben 4,5 Prozent der befragten Erwachsenen an, sie hätten in den vergangenen zwölf Monaten Cannabis konsumiert.

Der Cannabiszüchter fährt durch Berlin, er will eine neue Plantage aufbauen. Es geht langsam voran, Berufsverkehr. Ein Montagmittag im Oktober.
In seinem Auto sieht es aufgeräumt aus, der Aschenbecher ist leer, die Ledersitze sind sauber. Der Cannabiszüchter trägt ein beigefarbenes Oberhemd und eine Stoffhose mit Bügelfalte. Er ist Anfang dreißig, schlank, glattrasiert. »Ich will möglichst spießig wirken«, sagt er. Eine Sicherheitsmaßnahme, falls ihn die Polizei anhält.

Überraschung? Auch Briten haben Spionagetechnik in Berlin
In der letzten Woche haben wir erfahren, dass es in der amerikanischen Botschaft in Berlin offenbar ein “Spionagenest” gibt. Wärmebildkameras hatten das Vorhandensein von Abhör-Equipment auf dem Dach nahegelegt. Kein Wunder, erleichtert zumindest das Abhören von Kanzlerin Merkel und ihrer Regierungsriege.
Hingegen verwunderlich ist, dass die britische Botschaft, die direkt neben der US-Botschaft liegt, bisher noch keine Beachtung gefunden hat. Und dass, obwohl hier baulich nichts versteckt wurde. Frank Rieger hatte bereits nach Bekanntwerden der Botschaftsausstattung auf das Dach der Briten hingewiesen (lässt sich auch via Google Maps recht gut erkennen).

Enge Bundesheerkooperation mit der NSA
Österreich rangiert als NSA-Partner gleichauf mit Deutschland und 14 anderen NATO-Staaten. Das Bundesheer hatte auf Anfrage von ORF.at keine Erklärung für diesen Status.
Aus den in der vergangenen Woche veröffentlichten NSA-Dokumenten geht hervor, dass die Zusammenarbeit der österreichischen Militärgeheimdienste mit der NSA weit umfangreicher sein muss, als bisher bekannt war.
In einer Liste von Staaten, die mit der NSA am engsten zusammenarbeiten, findet sich das neutrale Österreich in einer überraschend prominenten Position. Als "Tier B"-Partner steht Österreich da in einer Reihe mit Deutschland und 14 weiteren NATO-Staaten, die "fokussierte Kooperation" mit der NSA betreiben. Dabei handelt es sich um "Kooperation bei Operationen in Computernetzen" und deren Auswertung ("Exploitation").

Snowden Publishes "A Manifesto For the Truth"
In the turbulent wake of the international uproar spurred by his leaked documents, Mr. Snowden published a letter over the weekend in Der Spiegel titled, "A Manifesto for the Truth". In the letter, Mr. Snowden reflects on the consequences of the information released so far, and their effect on exposing the extent and obscenity of international and domestic surveillance, while continuing to call out the NSA and GCHQ as the worst offenders.

How NSA targeted chancellor Merkel's mobile phone
Last week, the German weekly Der Spiegel revealed that NSA intercepted the mobile phone of the German chancellor Angela Merkel. Although most details were not known yet, the fact itself caused a severe crisis in the relationship between the United States and Germany.
Meanwhile, the original NSA targeting record containing chancellor Merkel's phone number has been published. One of the entries refers to a document about the NSA's SYNAPSE data model, which was disclosed earlier and provides us with a context for the targeting record. Finally, an impression of how the interception could have been conducted is given by a picture of the SCS interception equipment, which is presumably located in the US embassy in Berlin.
