NSA infected 50,000 computer networks with malicious software


The American intelligence service - NSA - infected more than 50,000 computer networks worldwide with malicious software designed to steal sensitive information. Documents provided by former NSA-employee Edward Snowden and seen by this newspaper, prove this.

A management presentation dating from 2012 explains how the NSA collects information worldwide. In addition, the presentation shows that the intelligence service uses ‘Computer Network Exploitation’ (CNE) in more than 50,000 locations. CNE is the secret infiltration of computer systems achieved by installing malware, malicious software.

Just 90 companies caused two-thirds of man-made global warming emissions


The climate crisis of the 21st century has been caused largely by just 90 companies, which between them produced nearly two-thirds of the greenhouse gas emissions generated since the dawning of the industrial age, new research suggests.

The companies range from investor-owned firms – household names such as Chevron, Exxon and BP – to state-owned and government-run firms.

N.S.A. Report Outlined Goals for More Power


Officials at the National Security Agency, intent on maintaining its dominance in intelligence collection, pledged last year to push to expand its surveillance powers, according to a top-secret strategy document.

In a February 2012 paper laying out the four-year strategy for the N.S.A.’s signals intelligence operations, which include the agency’s eavesdropping and communications data collection around the world, agency officials set an objective to “aggressively pursue legal authorities and a policy framework mapped more fully to the information age.”

London - Meinungsfreiheit und Privatsphäre brauchen im Internet mehr Schutz. Während in Entwicklungsländern eher Web-Inhalte zensiert oder blockiert würden, sei in Industrieländern die Überwachung der Online-Kommunikation durch staatliche Stellen ein größeres Problem, heißt es in dem am Freitag in London vorgestellten Web Index. Nur fünf der 81 untersuchten Länder wendeten rigorose Kontrollen für staatliche Überwachung an.

Brazilian who auctioned off virginity wants to sell it again


A 21-year-old Brazilian woman who auctioned off her virginity online for $780,000 last year now says she wants to sell it again as the deal was never consummated.

In October last year, Catarina Migliorini took part in an online auction as part of the “Virgins Wanted” documentary organised by Australian filmmaker Justin Sisely.

A Japanese identified only as Natsu beat out competition from 14 other men, mainly from Brazil, but also from India, Australia and the United States.

Feds raid Denver-area marijuana dispensaries


Six weeks before the nation's first retail marijuana shops open in Colorado, federal authorities on Thursday raided more than a dozen Denver metro area marijuana facilities and two homes.

In the largest federal raid on Colorado marijuana businesses since medical marijuana became legal, federal law enforcement agents with an assist from local police officers executed search and seizure warrants at multiple dispensaries and cultivation facilities — at least a dozen in Denver alone.

Maine Marijuana Legalization Fails


The Maine State Legislature failed to pass a bill on Thursday that would have legalized, taxed and regulated recreational marijuana for adults.

The Legislative Council, a 10-member group of legislative leaders that screens requests to introduce bills, voted 5-5 on the measure, effectively killing it. The bill will not be considered again until 2015.

Vorsicht vor Mineralöl in Nussschokolade


Mineralöl in Adventskalendern hat vergangenes Jahr für Furore gesorgt, jetzt droht Nusschokolade ein ähnliches Schicksal: Die Stiftung Warentest hat in vielen Tafeln Spuren von Mineralöl gefunden.

In Nussschokolade steckt laut der Stiftung Warentest oft Mineralöl. Die Tester haben in einer Untersuchung in fast allen geprüften Tafeln sogenannte aromatische Mineralöle nachgewiesen. Diese stehen zum Teil unter Krebsverdacht. Das Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung rät, die Stoffe in Lebensmitteln zu vermeiden. Die Substanzen stammen vermutlich aus den Verpackungen. Außerdem fanden die Warentester in allen 26 Schokoladen die als weniger kritisch geltenden gesättigten Mineralölfraktionen, berichtet die Zeitschrift „test“ (Ausgabe 12/2013).

Monty Python team to reveal details of reunion


The surviving members of comedy group Monty Python are to reveal their plans for a much-anticipated reunion later.

Eric Idle, Michael Palin, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones will attend a press conference in London to announce their first new project for three decades.

The project is believed to be a stage show, although the venue is still under wraps.
