If you're walking around downtown Seattle, look up: You'll see off-white boxes, each one about a foot tall with vertical antennae, attached to utility poles. If you're walking around downtown while looking at a smartphone, you will probably see at least one—and more likely two or three—Wi-Fi networks named after intersections: "4th&Seneca," "4th&Union," "4th&University," and so on. That is how you can see the Seattle Police Department's new wireless mesh network, bought from a California-based company called Aruba Networks, whose clients include the Department of Defense, school districts in Canada, oil-mining interests in China, and telecommunications companies in Saudi Arabia.

Skandale ohne Ende – Drogenvideo erschüttert britische Bankenbranche
An Skandalen hat es in der britischen Bankenbranche in den vergangenen Jahren nicht gemangelt: Es gab Staatsrettungen, milliardenschwere Fehlspekulationen und Ermittlungen wegen Marktmanipulation. Es gab Fälle, in denen Banken ihren Kunden hemmungslos Finanzschrott andrehten. Und es gab eine ganze Parade von Personalwechseln auf höchster Ebene – unter anderem wurde einem ehemaligen Bankenchef der Rittertitel entzogen.
Seit dem Wochenende reiht sich ein weiterer Skandal in die Liste ein: Ein Enthüllungsvideo zeigt, wie der ehemalige Aufsichtsratschef eines fast bankrotten Kreditinstituts mutmaßlich einen Drogenkauf einfädelt und das passende Geld dafür zählt.

How the Feds Took Down the Silk Road Drug Wonderland
The dramatic takedown of the Silk Road drug market and the arrest of its alleged owner on drug trafficking and murder-for-hire charges last month began in part with an offhand tip to Department of Homeland Security investigators in Maryland in mid-2011.
The informant told DHS investigators in Baltimore about an online drug bazaar where international sales of illicit drugs and other contraband were conducted with impunity and with the ease of buying cocktail stirrers or underwear on Amazon.

US-Beamte überprüfen Reisende in Deutschland
Am Frankfurter Flughafen arbeitet nicht nur der Zoll. Auch der Secret Service und das US-Heimatschutzministeriums sind an deutschen Flug- und Seehäfen aktiv. Sie entscheiden, wer ins Flugzeug steigen darf, welcher Container auf welches Schiff geladen wird - und im Zweifel nehmen sie offenbar sogar Menschen fest.
