Google Play About To Pass 15 Billion App Downloads? Pssht! It Did That Weeks Ago

Way to blow your own horn, Google. Yesterday a newspaper in the UK, the Independent, ran a short item about how Google was about to reach an app milestone — 15 billion apps downloaded. So we reached out to Google to ask about this… and guess what? It already happened.

A Google spokesperson, Gina Weakley Johnson, tells us the milestone was passed “a few weeks ago.”

The last number that Google released with more public declaration was 11 billion downloads, when the store was still called the Android Market, which it announced during its Q4 2011 earnings in January. In April, when Google reported its Q1 2012 earnings, it didn’t mention downloads on Google Play, the newly-rebranded store.

The James Randi Educational Foundation Gives Teachers a Hand

New York City was recently the host to the North East Conference on Science and Skepticism, or NECSS which is pronounced “nexus.” NECSS ran over three days and included some great events outside of the conference in different venues in NYC. Saturday April 20th was a full day of panels and presentation, including a live taping of “The Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe” with special guest James “The Amazing” Randi. NECSS was a great event for anyone who enjoys science and critical thinking.

One panel in particular that was of interest to me was Critical Thinking Education. On the panel were DJ Grothe, president of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF), Dr. Meghan Groome from the New York Academy of Science and Marc Barnhill, who teaches critical thinking at New York University. All three panelists have been involved in teaching critical thinking either in traditional classroom settings or as part of workshops for adults and educators.

Euro declines on French and Greek election results

The euro fell against the dollar and the pound on Monday following weekend election results.

Poor performances by pro-bailout parties in Greece and the victory of Francois Hollande in France, who wants to focus more on growth, have cast doubt on European austerity plans.

The euro fell as low as $1.295, its lowest since January, and dropped to three-year lows against the pound.
