Chimpanzees sharpen spikes for bush baby killings
Chimpanzees in West Africa have been observed using sharpened branches as "spears" to hunt other primates.
A report in the journal Current Biology documents 22 instances of chimps in Senegal creating tools to stab their bush baby prey. Bush babies are tiny and much more primitive primates related to the lemurs found in Madagascar.

Glaciers Not On Simple, Upward Trend Of Melting
The variability over such a short time, reported online Feb. 9 on Science magazine's Science Express, underlines the problem in assuming that glacial melting and sea level rise will necessarily occur at a steady upward trajectory, according to lead author Ian Howat, a post-doctoral researcher with the University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory and the University of Colorado's National Snow and Ice Data Center. The paper comes a year after a study in the journal Science revealed that discharge from Greenland's glaciers had doubled between 2000 and 2005, leading some scientists to speculate such changes were on a steady, upward climb.

Linq to ASCII Art
Last night I was searching for an audio version of Painters and Hackers by Paul Graham. Pretty soon I had completely forgotten about the book and found myself reading the Wikipedia article about Hackers. Isn't Internet search great?
Of all of the things in the article, the one thing that captured my attention was the ASCII picture of Adrian Lamo. I immediately thought, "How cool is that!?" So instead of popping off my current stack frame and returning to searching for Painters and Hackers, I began thinking about how to create such a picture. I certainly did not want to create it by hand. I didn't even want to pick which characters or colors would be printed to the screen. So accordingly, I began thinking of writing a program to do it for me.
