Election Tie? Get Out Pingpong Balls

If Hong Kong political candidates finish in a dead heat, the election will be decided by the luck of the draw — from a bag of numbered pingpong balls.

It may sound more like bingo than politics, but under Hong Kong electoral rules, the tied candidates must each pick a ball at random. Whoever pulls out the highest number takes office.

eBay domain hijacker arrested

Police in Germany have arrested a 19 year-old from Helmstedt for hijacking the site of eBay Germany about a week ago. Visitors to eBay Germany were redirected to a site hosted by internet provider Intergenia AG. Initially, phishers were suspected of the domain hijack.

The boy admitted he requested a DNS (domain name server) transfer for several high-profile sites, including Google.com, Web.de, Amazon.com and eBay Germany. While most of these transfers were denied, somehow eBay slipped through. It remains unclear how the domain could have been transferred without the consent of the existing holder.

Birt says Grade was PM's 'worst choice' for BBC job

The Prime Minister has been warned by his adviser John Birt that the choice of Michael Grade as chairman of the BBC is 'the worst public appointment' he has made.

The bitter verdict was offered in a letter to Number 10 by Birt shortly after Grade's appointment, according to new allegations made by Greg Dyke, Birt's successor as director-general. The claim, made in Dyke's new book, is likely to spark fresh anger about the influence exerted by Birt. As a Downing Street advisor, he will be party to the debate over the BBC's charter renewal and the future of the licence fee.

James's latest mistake causes England to let another lead slip

Just as David James thought he was watching a goalkeeper even more calamitous than his old blunder-riddled persona, an dreadful attack of the butterfingers cost England two points in Vienna. In the opposite goal, Alex Manninger, the ex-Arsenal goalkeeper who was known for a neurotic intensity which made Woody Allen look calm, had contrived to help England into a lead which was doubled by Steven Gerrard's wonderful strike.

First US Love Parade in San Francisco
Can You Love a Love Parade?

Berlin's legendary -- but embattled -- Love Parade makes a San Francisco debut. But will thousands dance to its beat?

I went to Berlin and hopped a float at the Love Parade to celebrate life. Half an hour later, I was pretty sure I was about to watch someone careen to his death.

That year, there were more than a million people in attendance at the annual, daylong, techno- and trance-fueled music parade, which honors peace and diversity and offers a goodly dose of sex and skin. For the moment, though, it was all about this one kid in his early 20s.
