1991 interview offered look into mind of a rising rock star

Kurt Cobain was eating lunch at his mom's house in Aberdeen when I called to interview him for a story on a show coming up about week later — Halloween night — at the Paramount Theatre.

It was Oct. 23, 1991, shortly after "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was released as a single. "Nevermind," the album it came from, had been out for a month but had not yet charted. The single was mainly what I wanted to talk about, because it was the best rock song I'd heard in years. Neither one of us knew then, of course, that it was about to profoundly change his life, and the history of rock 'n' roll.

Google and Yahoo! ban gambling ads

nternet giants Google and Yahoo! will stop carrying adverts for online casinos, blaming a "lack of clarity" in US regulations.

US prosecutors last month warned companies that running ads for offshore online casinos was equivalent to "aiding and abetting". It is illegal to run an online gambling site from within the US.

Size does matter
Prominent penis gives cold-dwelling mammals an edge.

A study of animals across the world has confirmed what many men have long suspected - a large penis can be a recipe for success in the mating game.

The value of an impressive organ depends on the terrain, however. Animals at high latitudes tend to benefit more from being better endowed than species in more hospitable climes, according to Steven Ferguson of the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, Canada, and Serge Larivière from the Delta Waterfowl Foundation in Portage La Prairie, Canada.

Eurotunnel TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine)

This 580 tonnes monster machine is a prized relic from the greatest construction achievement of the 20th century, the Channel Tunnel. Although no longer fully operational, this enormous piece of engineering folklore will be of interest to science museums and technical enthusiasts around the world looking for a slice of history during the tenth anniversary of Eurotunnel's opening. The TBM is currently located at the Eurotunnel terminal in Folkstone.
