Red Hat bietet staatlich anerkannten Bildungseinrichtungen neue Sonderkonditionen für seine Linux-Produkte an. Das neue "Academic-Programm" soll aber auch die Kosten für Schüler und Studenten senken. So können Ausbildungsstätten und Einzelpersonen Red Hat Enterprise Linux ab 25,- Euro im Jahr abonnieren.

Probleme mit Windows Update
Seit einiger Zeit tauchen vermehrt Schwierigkeiten auf, über die Windows-Update-Funktion die Microsoft-Patches einzuspielen. Die Hauptseite funktioniert zwar reibungslos, aber sobald man auf "Updates suchen" klickt, erhält man die Fehlermeldung "Windows Update kann die gewünschte Seite nicht anzeigen" mit der Fehlerkennung 0x800A138F.
Die Ursache für das Problem ist derzeit unklar.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments Wednesday over whether the federal government should reimburse individuals whose sensitive data was disclosed illegally, even if no harm can be proven.
At issue before the court, according to privacy advocates, is how valuable privacy really is.

Deputy Fired After Hitting, Killing Bear With Cruiser
A Lake County deputy was fired Monday after he hit and killed a Florida black bear with his patrol car on State Road 19 north of Altoona. This was an accident and not an unusual one. Twenty-four Florida black bears have been hit and killed in the area this year alone. The real problem here is the deputy's speed before this crash and his speed in another incident.

Thailand Opens First Hospital for Monkeys
It was a busy day at Thailand's first monkey hospital, which opened Wednesday in Lopburi, 70 miles north of Bangkok.
The 2,000 monkeys roaming free in central Lopburi are the city's main tourist attraction. A feast held for them each November brings thousands of visitors.

Frisch operierte Patienten müssen in vielen Krankenhäusern unnötig leiden, meinen deutsche Experten. Bisher werde nur in den seltensten Fällen eine angemessene Behandlung der postoperativen Beschwerden schon vor oder zumindest während des chirurgischen Eingriffs geplant, wie die Deutsche Gesellschaft zum Studium des Schmerzes kritisiert.

Microsoft Test Drives Another Blogging Tool
Microsoft may not have an official corporate policy on Web logging, or blogging. But that isn't stopping the Redmond software vendor from setting up hosted blog communities, left and right.
The latest Microsoft-sponsored blogging site is called "The Spoke." It is a project of Microsoft's academic developer group and seems to be targeted primarily at university students.
