‘Mother of all bombs’ tested in Florida
The mushroom cloud from a GBU-43/B, also known as the Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), can be seen rising in this Air Force video still image after it was launched successfully from a MC-130E Combat Talon I aircraft on Friday. The 21,700-pound bomb was dropped from 20,000 feet to reach its target on one of Eglin's test ranges. Upon detonation, it created a plume over the Florida Panhandle that rose more than 10,000 feet and could be seen from 40 miles away.

DVD Jon unlocks iTunes' locked music QTFairUse
Jon Lech Johansen, better known as DVD Jon for his authorship of the DeCSS decryption software, has turned his attention to Apple's locked music format.
While he hasn't decrypted the DRM which Apple uses, he has produced a simple Windows command line utility which will install a DLL which dumps the output of a QuickTime stream to a file.

First photograph sits for own portrait
An 1826 image widely acknowledged as the world’s earliest photograph is the subject of its own close-up, the first in the half-century since a historian hauled the faint snapshot out of an old trunk. The fresh portrait of the first photo was unveiled Friday during an Austin, Texas, symposium celebrating the life and work of pioneer photographer Joseph Nicephore Niepce.
