Mit 1.700 Volt Wechselstrom ist am 6. August 1890 im US-Gefängnis Auburn erstmals ein verurteilter Mörder hingerichtet worden. Die US-Justizbehörden hatten lange nach einer "modernen", "sauberen" Form der Exekution gesucht. Strom-Pionier Thomas Edison überzeugte sie schließlich, dass der elektrische Stuhl die richtige Lösung sei. Doch mit seinem Einsatz für die morbide Erfindung wollte Edison vor allem eines bewirken: das Wechselstrom-System seines Konkurrenten George Westinghouse in den Schmutz ziehen.

HERO Archive.org to Vivendi: we'll host MP3.com's files
MP3.com founder Robertson is in talks with Vivendi Universal to save the music collection at the site. CNET bought the domain name last week after a night on the tiles, and Vivendi said the archive will close in December.
But Archive.org founder Brewster Kahle says he's only too happy to host the collection.

Glowing Fish to Be First Genetically Changed Pet
A little tropical fish that glows fluorescent red will be the first genetically engineered pet, a Texas-based company said on Friday The zebra fish were originally developed to detect environmental toxins, but Alan Blake and colleagues at Yorktown Technologies, L.P. licensed them to sell as pets.
"These fish were bred to help fight environmental pollution," Blake said in a telephone interview. "They were bred to fluoresce in the presence of toxins." .

Imbissstand in die Luft geflogen
Kurz vor 18.00 Uhr hat sich in Feldkirch-Tosters (Vorarlberg/Österreich) eine heftige Explosion ereignet. Vermutlich wegen austretendem Propangas ist ein Imbissstand in die Luft geflogen. Einige Teile wurden bis zu 80 Meter durch die Luft geschleudert. Der Besitzer des Imbissstandes wurde schwer verletzt.
