Symantec Releases Six-Month Internet Security Report


Symantec today released its semiannual Internet Security Threat Report, and the results were not pretty.

In the past six months, Web application vulnerabilities increased 12 percent, malicious codes were up 20 percent, and worms and viruses increased 19 percent, according to the report.

Seit dem gestrigen Mittwoch mehren sich Meldungen über Vorfälle, bei denen sich Anwender mit dem Trojaner QHosts-1 infiziert haben. QHosts-1 befällt Rechner über eine bisher nicht gepatchte Lücke im Internet Explorer 5, 5.5 und 6.0. Das Aufrufen einer HTML-Seite genügt bereits, um sich mit dem Trojaner zu infizieren

The purpose of this trojan is to "hijack" browser use. When page requests are made, they are rerouted to specified Domain Name Servers. This allows a remote "administrator" to direct users to the pages of their choosing. For example, if an infected user attempted to navigate to www.google.com, they would be routed to a different site.

Earth Simulator delights scientists


A new era in the accuracy of climate prediction has come closer with the presentation of the first results from the largest supercomputer in the world.

The Earth Simulator, housed in Japan, has produced what scientists are calling "very exciting" information.

Space Station Chief Says No New Weddings


The current international space station crew marked the first wedding from orbit. But the U.S. commander of the replacement team said Wednesday that no one on his watch will tie or untie the knot.

"We do not plan to do any new marriages or divorces in space," Michael Foale said after a news conference at the Star City cosmonaut training center outside Moscow. "We are a very boring crew in that regard."

Pentagon Awards $40M for Blimp Contract


The Pentagon (news - web sites) has awarded Lockheed Martin Corp. a $40 million contract to develop a high-flying, remote-controlled blimp that would monitor U.S. borders and scan the horizon for enemy missiles. The idea is to supplement radar and satellites. The helium-filled dirigibles — about 25 times larger than those seen at sporting events — could also be used to monitor combat zones overseas.

The "r0x s0x" Virus:
Anyone else having their DNS settings maliciously switched?


Hi all

Whilst trying to sort a VPN problem on my workstation today I >discovered that the DNS server addresses on both of my LAN >cards had been changed (remotely, I am assuming) to >69.57.146.14 & 69.57.147.175.

It appears you are not the only one experiencing this. A similar event was posted to Bugtraq last night and there are other eports as well. A copy of the bugtraq post appears below:

More Than 3,500 Pounds Of Marijuana Found At Fla. Port


More than 3,500 pounds of marijuana were found hidden in a container at the Port of Palm Beach Wednesday.

Officers with the U-S Customs and Border Protection found the container behind a false wall in the nose of a sea cargo container coming from Georgetown, Grand Cayman. The container was being transported aboard the M/V Helen T.

Kuwait foils smuggling of chemicals, bio warheads from Iraq

Schoolboy's photo amazes Nasa


Jonathan Burnett, 15, was taking snaps of his friends performing skateboarding stunts near his home in Pencoed near Bridgend when a bright light in the sky caught his attention.

A Linux Distro for Barbie?


Making a bid for a piece of the emerging desktop Linux market, Mattel, Inc. announced the immediate availability of downloadable beta ISOs for BarbieOS 0.99, and said it hoped the final 1.0 retail version would be on store shelves in time for Christmas. The new OS was created by Mattel to power the upcoming revision of its popular B-Book line of laptops for girls between the ages of four and eleven. The original B-Book laptop, which ran a modified version of PalmOS, was a huge hit with consumers last holiday season, so much so that many stores had trouble keeping them in stock.

Indonesian ministry seeks to criminalise oral sex


Cohabitation, oral sex and homosexual sex will soon become crimes in Indonesia if the justice ministry has its way, a ministry spokesman said. The ministry is drafting an amendment to the country's criminal code to include acts not currently categorised as crimes but considered morally unacceptable.
